Gingrich Campaign Gets Major Support in New Hampshire (The Atlantic Wire)

Newt Gingrich's campaign has added a big endorsement in the state of New Hampshire from the publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader, Joseph McQuaid. McQuaid writes that Gingrich has "innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership" that the Republican party needs:

Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate. But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running. In this incredibly important election, that candidate is Newt Gingrich. He has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times. He is worthy of your support on January 10.

Romney has been the clear front-runner in the Republican race, but according to an editorial board member from the Union Leader he wasn't even one the paper's final two choices. In an interview with CNN, Union Leader?page editor Andrew Cline said the endorsement choices came down to Newt and Texas Governor Rick Perry. Romney's been campaigning heavily in New Hampshire, but recent polls have showed Gingrich slowly closing the gap between the two.

Politico reports Romney has been "assiduously" courting the paper leading up to the endorsement. Romney was even pictured at an event recently sitting with McQuaid. The Union Leader has long been critical of Romney. In his interview with CNN, Cline said the paper gave him a "fresh start" but ultimately it was Gingrich's pedigree that won him the endorsement. He called Romney, "a politician who wants to be liked," instead of Gingrich, who, "wants to be respected, who wants to actually accomplish - he has an agenda that he wants to set in place."

The 'increasingly intolerable' glut of GOP debates: 4 consequences (The Week)

New York ? Republicans have already squared off nearly a dozen times ? and they're only halfway through the debate season

With the Republican presidential candidates constantly slugging it out in a seemingly endless stream of televised showdowns, it seems likely that 2011 will be remembered as the "year of the debate," says Michael Calderone at The Huffington Post. The 11th major debate of the campaign season was held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and there are nearly a dozen more GOP primary debates still to come. Plenty of people are watching, and the candidate forums appear to be having a major impact on the race. How? Here, four consequences of the "increasingly intolerable" glut of debates:

1. Gaffes are blown way out of proportion
The media has been "lapping up every big 'viral' moment, making the most of the gaffes and stumbles and eternally questing for the next meltdown," says Jason Linkins at The Huffington Post. As a result, the slip-ups are overshadowing the substance of many of the debates, making them matter more than they should. "The early debates helped introduce the candidates to the Republican primary electorate," says Byron York in the Washington Examiner, and the later ones will help undecided voters make up their minds. But many in the middle served little purpose ? other than to provide another "occasion for a major gaffe or gotcha."

SEE MORE: The GOP's 'elimination round' debate: 4 key questions

?

2. Serious candidates are taken less seriously
"We are essentially witnessing Republican presidential politics morph into a kind of right-wing reality TV series," says Ryan Lizza at The New Yorker. This popular elimination format has been good news for "'politainment' conservatives like Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich, and not so great for successful governors like Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman, and Rick Perry." Some veteran Republicans worry this is the wrong image to project when picking a candidate for the job of leading the free world, says Michael D. Shear in The New York Times. The cumulative effect of all the embarrassing moments, they fear, may be the weakening of "the party brand, especially in foreign policy and national security, where Republicans have typically dominated Democrats."?

3."Retail" campaigning isn't what it used to be
"Once, it was the vaunted campaign machine, or the bulging bank accounts, or the number of key endorsements that defined who was up and who was down," says Ken Rudin at NPR. But this year, those elements of "retail" campaigning aren't all that critical. It really just seems to be the debates that matter. "Never before in a campaign cycle has the story line ? the rise and fall of frontrunners, the fluctuations in the polls ? been almost exclusively about what comes out of the debates."

SEE MORE: The 'disgraceful' CBS debate: Did the network mess up?

?

4. Candidates are getting tired
This isn't easy for the Republicans, says Rupert Cornwell in Britain's Independent. Sure, they "get free exposure" from the nationally televised debates, but in each forum, they have to keep tacking to the right to win over conservative primary voters. As the debate season drags on, every appearance means another occasion to let something slip that will be "fodder for the Obama campaign" in the general election, when the challenge will be wooing moderates and independents. No wonder "some candidates have suggested they might skip a few, if only to conserve their energy."

HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx

The HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx ($699.99 list at Best Buy), a budget desktop replacement laptop, has a battery capable of lasting over nine hours and several wireless technologies working under its sleek aluminum body. Its Core i5 processor offered solid performance in day-to-day, and considering its price point, this laptop can compete with the best of them.

Design
The dv7-6b55dx has the same brushed, dark umber aluminum lid and palm rest as the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-6163cl ($949.99 list, 4 stars). A small HP logo sits in the lower-left hand corner, and illuminates when the laptop is turned on. A silver band lines the edge of the laptop, breaking up the deep brown design. The entire system weighs 6.94 pounds, and 1.05 pounds of that total weight can be attributed to its 9-cell 100Wh battery. The battery is so big that it actually raises the laptop up at a slight angle in the back. The HP dv7-6163cl has the same battery, but weights slightly more (7.4 pounds) than the dv7-6b55dx.

The 17.3-inch screen is framed by a glossy black bezel and displays in 1,600-by-900 resolution, which translates to 720p HD. If you're looking for a true 1080p HD viewing experience, you'll have to start looking at laptops like the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 ($1,499.99 street, 4 stars), which come at a premium. However, you can export video on the laptop to an external display in 1080p through the HDMI port or built-in WiDi 2.0 streaming technology, which allows you to wirelessly display your computer's content (provided you have a Netgear Push2TV adapter to receive the signal).

Its chiclet-style keyboard is full-size and has a numeric keypad to boot. The trackpad has a light texture, and provided a comfortable surface to navigate on. The separate mouse buttons where easy to click, providing little resistance to register a tap. The entire touchpad is framed by a white light, which will help users that like to work late nights.

Features
The dv7-6b55dx comes equipped with several standout features such as two USB 3.0 ports and WiMAX 4G broadband. Topping off the feature list are two USB 2.0 ports, a tray-loading DVD+-RW drive, VGA video output, media card reader (SD, MMC), two headphone and one mic jack, Ethernet port, fingerprint reader, and a Webcam above the screen. The Pavilion dv7-6b55dx also features the sexy Beats Audio software, which allows you to ramp up the bass and tailor your listening experience depending on if you're watching a movie, listening to a podcast, or playing music. The Beats Audio software ultimately helps output better sound whether you're listening through headphones or through HP's laptop speakers. The built-in HP triple bass subwoofers certainly helped create more depth in sound.

Its 750GB hard drive should be sufficient to hold all your digital content with room to spare. However, it does come loaded with some bloatware. Bing Bar, Blio ereader, Evernote, and a desktop shortcut to eBay top off the list.

Best Buy offers an extended warranty program, which gives customers an extra year of protection beyond the one-year warranty of most system manufacturers. There are two plans in this extended warranty program. The standard plan ($119.99) covers the system against normal wear and tear, power surge damage, and includes a "No Lemon" guarantee in which Best Buy will simply replace the computer if it requires more than four repairs during the coverage period. Best Buy's advanced plan ($219.99) offers all this, and also covers the system against accidental damage from drops and spills. Other special offers can be found online or in stores, like discounts on printers, software, and tech support plans which are available with any new PC purchased through Best Buy.

Performance
HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx The dv7-6b55dx is equipped with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-2430M processor and 8GB of RAM. In day-to-day tasks, the dv7-6b55dx is a solid performer, as shown in our PCMark 7 test (2,406). A Core i5 processor in the sub-$700 price range is fairly standard, so there wasn't a huge variation in performance scores among laptops like the Asus U56E-BBL6 ($699.99 list, 4 stars) (2,255) and Dell Inspiron i17R-6434DBK ($749.99 list, 3.5 stars) (2,240). In more CPU-intensive tasks, there weren't any major differences in scores. For instance, it took the dv7-6b55dx 4 minutes 2 seconds to run through our Photoshop CS5 script, while it took the Asus U56E-BBL6 the same amount of time (4:02) and the Dell i17-6434DBK 4:09. Likewise, in Cinebench R11.5, a 3D rendering test, the dv7-6b55dx scored 2.71 points where the Asus U56E-BBL6 scored 2.68.

The dv7-6b55dx doesn't come equipped with a discrete graphics card, like the HP dv7-6163cl (AMD Radeon HD 6770M). Rather it has Intel integrated graphics, which won't get you as far as a dedicated chip would on the gaming grid. The dv7-6b55dx wasn't able to garner a playable frame rate average (30fps is considered playble) in either DirectX 10 Crysis (13.6 frames per second) or DirectX 9 Lost Planet 2 (20 fps); whereas the HP dv7-6163cl tore through Crysis (53fps) on Medium quality settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution. So if you want to play anything beyond World of Warcraft, you'll have to start considering laptops in the $900 price range.

In our MobileMark 2007 battery test, the dv7-6b55dx's 100Wh battery lasted 9 hours 33 minutes, longer than the HP dv7-6163cl's same-size (100Wh)battery (8:24) and Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft)'s ($999 direct, 4 stars) smaller 54Wh battery (7:13).

The HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx has a lot of features to recommend it, like WiDi 2.0, WiMAX 4G, and USB 3.0. However, the Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6 offers the same features at the same price, but in a slightly more portable 15.6-inch package. If your work/life requires a bigger screen, longer battery life (2 hours more than Asus), better audio quality (though not by much), and more security out of its fingerprint reader, then the dv7-6b55dx might be the better option. But it's not quite enough to usurp the Asus U56E-BBL6 as the current Editors' Choice, if only because it got there first.

TSX hits seven-week low as Europe worries weigh (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Toronto's main stock index fell to a seven-week low on Thursday as resource-related issues slid after a meeting of European leaders failed to stem market fears about the euro zone debt crisis.

Energy and materials were the main drags on the index, each falling nearly 1 percent, as oil and gas producers and gold miners were hit by fears of a slowdown in Europe.

Enbridge Inc fell 2.8 percent to C$35.11 and Barrick Gold slumped 1.4 percent to C$49.55 to lead their respective sector's losses.

"The simple answer to present market woes continues to be Europe," said Elvis Picardo, strategist and vice-president of research at Global Securities. "On the TSX, the downside is being led by commodity groups."

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index ended the session down 86.39 points, or 0.75 percent, at 11,485.32, its lowest close since October 5.

With U.S. markets closed for Thanksgiving and the absence of any significant North American earnings news, investors were focused on the outcome of a meeting between the leaders of Germany, France and Italy - the euro zone's top three economies.

Apart from agreeing not to pressure the European Central Bank to do more to rescue the region from its debt woes, the meeting between French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti produced little for investors to rally behind.

"This is the train wreck unfolding in slow motion," said Paul Taylor, chief investment officer at BMO Harris.

On Wednesday, a weak German 10-year bond auction pushed the cost of borrowing for Europe's economic heavyweight above that of the United States for the first time since October, helping send global markets lower.

Despite having little exposure to European sovereign debt holdings, Canadian financials were also caught in Thursday's slide, dipping 0.7 percent.

Bank of Montreal skidded 1.7 percent to C$55.25 while Bank of Nova Scotia fell 0.9 percent to C$48.35.

Wednesday's negative momentum continued in part due to weak trading volumes as many North American bidders took the day off with U.S. markets closed for Thanksgiving.

"There's a bit of a buyer's boycott, particularly with the Americans not in this week," said Irwin Michael, portfolio manager of ABC Funds. "I would take the levels of trading and the current changes in the TSX with a grain of salt, just because there's not a lot of activity."

As the U.S. markets open again on Friday, investors will be eyeing early results from Black Friday retail sales south of the border.

"There will be a lot of people looking at retail sales tomorrow and doing mall checks and trying to get a sense of the pulse of the U.S. consumer," said Taylor.

In individual company news, Dundee Precious Metals Inc shares jumped 4.8 percent to C$8.89 after the mining company said it received environmental approval from the Bulgarian government for its Krumovgrad gold project.

Officials say plan on al Qaeda detainees would harm probes (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A Senate plan requiring that all foreign al Qaeda suspects found in the United States be turned over to the military instead of civilian law enforcement could gravely damage U.S. counter-terrorism investigations, the Obama administration warned.

Top administration officials charged that the plan would set up new hurdles for U.S. investigators - particularly at the FBI and the Justice Department - and would raise questions as to how and when they must involve the military.

Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a rare display of bipartisanship, approved the provision earlier this month as part of an important defense bill. It could be voted on by the full Senate early next week.

Officials said that if the current plan is approved by both the House and Senate, Obama aides will recommend a presidential veto of the entire defense bill, which contains many other vital defense-related provisions.

"Agents and prosecutors should not have to spend their time worrying about citizenship status and whether and how to get a waiver signed by the Secretary of Defense in order to thwart an al Qaeda plot against the homeland," Lisa Monaco, assistant attorney general for national security, told Reuters.

"Rather than provide new tools and flexibility for FBI operators and our intelligence professionals, this legislation creates new procedures and paperwork for FBI agents, intelligence lawyers and counter-terrorism prosecutors," she said.

Currently, suspects detained in the United States normally go into the civilian justice system, while those caught overseas are held under U.S. military jurisdiction.

The dispute appears to be about more than just bureaucratic turf battles, and risks reopening bitter disputes over handling militant suspects that in some cases have taken a decade to resolve.

NO 'MIRANDA' REQUIRED

One prominent Republican backer of the plan, Senator Lindsay Graham, said that in his view, the Obama administration has been too eager to process al Qaeda suspects caught in the United States through the civilian criminal justice system.

This usually involves them quickly being given the mandatory "Miranda" warnings about their rights to legal counsel and to remain silent, he said.

Requiring that the administration transfer foreign al Qaeda suspects into military custody, Graham said in an interview on Wednesday, would give investigators time to interrogate suspects and gather intelligence about potential plots without giving them warnings which might cause them to stop talking.

"Military custody is the best place for intelligence gathering," Graham said, adding that Congress was "fed up" with administration moves to "civilianize" what some legislators still regard principally as a war against militants.

A congressional aide close to backers of the committee plan insisted that it gives the administration the freedom to make a determination on military custody.

"If the FBI is investigating, they investigate. No ongoing surveillance, intelligence gathering or interrogation is interrupted" under the bill's provisions, the aide insisted.

Under the plan, unanimously approved by the committee, military custody requirements would apply both to suspects detained by U.S. forces overseas, and to suspects alleged to be connected to al Qaeda or an "associated force" of foreign nationality who are detained on U.S. soil.

Al Qaeda suspects of U.S. nationality or residency arrested in the United States. would still be processed through the civilian court system.

After complaints from the White House, the Armed Services Committee tweaked its proposal to include a provision authorizing the administration to formally waive the military custody provisions in cases where it deems that national security would benefit from such a move.

As an example of how military handling of detainees is not an intelligence-producing panacea, law enforcement officials cited the case of an alleged al Qaeda "sleeper agent" of Saudi and Qatari nationality who was picked up in the United States after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

According to the officials, Ali al-Marri was initially arrested as a material witness, then charged in civilian courts with credit card and identity fraud violations. But in 2003, President George W. Bush designated al-Marri as an "enemy combatant" and had him transferred to a military brig in South Carolina.

Instead of being treated harshly, U.S. officials said, al Marri was given a suite of cells at the military prison, complete with his own Islamic library and exercise equipment. Despite repeated questioning by military interrogators over several years, the officials said, al Marri never provided them with any information.

However, the officials said, after President Obama in 2009 ordered that al Marri's case be reviewed, he was subsequently transferred back into the civilian court system.

He eventually pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in which he admitted dealings with alleged top al Qaeda operative Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his involvement in alleged research into chemical weapons on al Qaeda's behalf. However, he did not give prosecutors or civilian investigators additional information.

(Editing by Warren Strobel and Jackie Frank)

(This article has been modified to correct to say al Marri did not give investigators more information in the last paragraph)

Vitamin D-fortified yoghurt improves cholesterol levels and heart disease biomarkers for diabetics

People with diabetes are known to have an increased risk of heart disease. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine shows that regular consumption of a vitamin D-fortified yoghurt drink improves cholesterol levels and biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, a precursor of heart disease, in diabetics.

Not having enough vitamin D affects the inner lining of blood vessels (endothelial cells) eventually leading to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Endothelial dysfunction can be measured by the increased levels of a set of biomarkers, such as serum endothelin-1, E-Selectin and MMP-9. In a double-blind trial, researchers from Tehran investigated the effect of vitamin D on the glycemic status, cholesterol levels and endothelial biomarkers of diabetics. Patients were given either a plain yoghurt drink (Doogh) or the same drink fortified with vitamin D twice a day for 12 weeks.

Researchers from the National Research Institute and Faculty of Nutrition and Food Technology had previously shown that a vitamin D-fortified yoghurt drink could improve the glycemic status of people with type 2 diabetes. In collaboration with Tehran University of Medical Sciences their new trial showed that vitamin D improved the fasting glucose, insulin, QUICK1 (a measure of insulin resistance), and found some improvement in long term HbA1c.

Dr Neyestani explained, "The patients who had taken the vitamin D yoghurt also had improved cholesterol levels with lower total cholesterol and LDL levels and an increase in HDL. All the improvements in cholesterol seemed to be due to the reduction in insulin resistance. The biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, serum endothelin-1, E-Selectin and MMP-9, levels were also lower for the patients taking vitamin D."

Prof Djazayery continued, "Most of our patients were deficient in vitamin D at the start of the trial but the fortified yoghurt drink elevated most of their levels to normal. However, even amongst those who took the vitamin D supplement, some people (about 5%) remained deficient at the end of the 12 weeks. These people did not show the same improvements. Nevertheless for most diabetics with vitamin D deficiency this is an easy way to improve their outcome."

(AP) ? The parents of missing child Madeleine McCann called Wednesday for fundamental changes to Britain's media culture, saying they were left distraught by false stories and the publication of private information by a rapacious tabloid press.

Kate and Gerry McCann told a media ethics inquiry that they felt powerless in the face of stories, based on confected evidence, suggesting they had killed their daughter, who vanished during the British family's vacation in Portugal in 2007. The disappearance of the 3-year-old, and her parents' search for her, fueled a media frenzy.

"Lives are being harmed by these stories, and something has to change," Gerry McCann said. "A commercial imperative is not acceptable."

The couple appeared as witnesses at an inquiry set up by Prime Minister David Cameron in response to a scandal over phone hacking by journalists at the now-shuttered News of the World tabloid. A judge at London's Royal Courts of Justice has heard evidence from celebrities including actor Hugh Grant and comedian Steve Coogan, and from ordinary people like the McCanns left bruised by unwanted media attention.

The McCanns, both 43, said press coverage of Madeleine's disappearance was initially sympathetic but soon changed, with some articles implying the parents were hiding something. One story said the couple had sold their daughter into slavery, another that they had killed her and hid her body in a freezer.

Gerry McCann said such articles were "nothing short of disgusting."

His wife said they felt powerless to do anything about the coverage,

"These were desperate times," Kate McCann said. "When it's your voice against a powerful media, it just doesn't hold weight."

The couple successfully sued several British newspapers over suggestions that they had caused their daughter's death and then covered it up. Two, the Daily Express and the Daily Star, were forced to print front-page apologies to the McCanns.

Kate McCann described her dismay when extracts from her private diary ? in which she wrote to her missing daughter ? appeared in the News of the World in 2008. The couple is still unsure how the newspaper obtained the journal.

"I felt totally violated," she said. "There was absolutely no respect shown to me as a grieving mother or as a human being, or to my daughter.

"I just felt so worthless we'd been treated like that."

Gerry McCann said he and his wife did not think their phones had been hacked, but had volunteered to testify at the inquiry "for one simple reason ? we feel a system has to be put in place to protect ordinary people from the damage the media can cause."

They acknowledged seeking media coverage of the search for their daughter, but said it had triggered a wave of intrusion. Gerry McCann said that "by engaging, it was more or less open season" on them for the tabloid press.

It is still not clear what happened to Madeleine, despite her parents' far-reaching international campaign and numerous reported sightings from around the world.

The inquiry, led by Judge Brian Leveson, plans to issue a report next year and could recommend major changes to media regulation in Britain.

The hearings have heard allegations of media malpractice and intrusion that extend far beyond the News of the World, which has admitted illegally accessing the mobile phone voice mails of celebrities, politicians and crime victims and was shut down by owner Rupert Murdoch in July.

On Thursday the inquiry will hear from actress Sienna Miller, who won damages for phone hacking from the News of the World, and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, one of Britain's richest people, who has fought to keep her children out of the media glare.

A lawyer for several phone hacking victims told the inquiry Wednesday that illegal eavesdropping was not limited to the News of the World.

"It was a much more widespread practice than just one newspaper," said Mark Lewis, whose clients include the family of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler, whose voice mails were accessed by the News of the World after she disappeared in 2002.

Milly Dowler's parents spoke Monday before the inquiry, saying the hacking gave them false hope their daughter was still alive during the investigation into her disappearance.

Lewis claimed that listening in on voice mails was so easy that many journalists regarded it as no more serious than "driving at 35 mph in a 30 mph zone."

He said the News of the World got caught because it hired a private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, who kept detailed records of his snooping assignments. Mulcaire and News of the World reporter Clive Goodman were jailed in 2007 for hacking into the voice mails of royal aides.

"The fact that evidence doesn't exist in written form doesn't mean to say that the crime didn't happen," Lewis said.

More than a dozen News of the World journalists and editors have been arrested over allegations of illegal eavesdropping, and two top London police officers also lost their jobs, along with Cameron's media adviser.

Several senior Murdoch executives have resigned in the still-evolving scandal, which has fueled calls for the mogul's son James Murdoch to step down as head of the international branch of his father's News Corp.

On Wednesday the company confirmed that James Murdoch had resigned in September as a director of the companies that publish The Sun and The Times of London newspapers, although he remains chairman of News International, the British arm of News Corp.

Oil price up on Mideast strife, Europe debt plan (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices rose Tuesday on concerns that Middle East strife could disrupt supplies and on hopes that Europe's debt crisis wouldn't lead to worldwide financial gridlock.

West Texas Intermediate crude, the benchmark used to price oil in much of the U.S., rose $1.09 to end at $98.01 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price oil produced in many foreign countries, rose $1.99 to finish at $108.65 a barrel in London.

Oil prices rose on worries that new international sanctions on Iran would reduce the flow of oil from the world's fourth biggest oil producer. Also large, violent protests in Egypt stirred fears that upheaval in the region could spread and disrupt supplies. Egypt is not a major oil producer, but it does control important energy supply lines and wields considerable influence in the region.

The worst fears about Europe's debt crisis ? that it could lead to a lending crisis and financial gridlock around the world ? were allayed somewhat Tuesday by the announcement of an International Monetary Fund plan designed to help prevent the debt crisis in Europe from spreading. The IMF plan would provide quick cash on flexible terms to countries facing sudden financial stress.

Concerns remain that Europe's debt crisis is pushing the region toward recession, which would slow industrial activity in Europe and in countries around the world that export to Europe.

In the U.S., the Commerce Department said the economy grew more slowly over the summer than the government had earlier estimated. That picture of a sluggish economy helped drive the stock market mostly lower Tuesday.

When the global economy slows, demand for crude oil and refined products like diesel and gasoline falls because fewer goods are produced and shipped, and people travel less. Even with Tuesday's gain, oil is down 5 percent since last Wednesday, when it spiked to $102.59 per barrel.

"The market is concerned on the one hand about the rate of economic growth," said Andrew Lipow, an independent oil analyst based in Houston. "On the other hand issues in the Middle East are continuing."

There was some encouraging economic news in the U.S., however, that helped push oil higher Tuesday. The government reported that inventories of goods fell over the summer. That raised hopes that the economy could grow faster than expected in the current quarter, if factories crank up to restock shelves.

And mild weather forecast for much of the U.S. over the Thanksgiving weekend is expected to motivate drivers to hit the road to visit families and shop. The price of gasoline futures rose nearly 3 percent, to finish at $2.5618 a gallon in New York, a gain of 7.28 cents.

At the pump, retail gasoline fell almost a penny to a national average of $3.34 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA, Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. In coming days the higher price of wholesale gasoline could push up pump prices.

Gasoline demand has been falling in the U.S. for the past several months. It began to drop sharply as prices rose above $4 per gallon in many states last winter and spring. Current pump prices, while still high, are 16 percent below the peak national average of $3.98 per gallon reached on May 5.

In other energy trading in New York on Tuesday, natural gas rose 2 cents to finish at $3.4150 per 1,000 cubic feet, and heating oil rose 4 cents to end the day at $3.0346 a gallon.

Lions RB Smith making most of second chance

Kevin Smith

By NOAH TRISTER

updated 4:24 p.m. ET Nov. 23, 2011

DETROIT - Less than four years removed from one of the most sensational seasons college football has seen, Kevin Smith was back home in Florida, waiting and hoping for a chance to revive what once looked like such a promising career.

Let go by the Detroit Lions in March, the injury-plagued Smith was at a crossroads that seemed more like a dead end ? at least as far as his football future was concerned.

"It's a humbling experience. I definitely have an appreciation for the game and know that the NFL is 'Not For Long,'" Smith said. "If you make it one year, two years, no matter what line you get picked, it's always a blessing."

After a half-season out of the league, Smith was finally offered his second chance ? by the same team that wouldn't give him a contract a few months earlier. With its banged-up backfield needing a boost, Detroit brought back Smith. Last weekend, in the second game of his new stint with the Lions, he scored three touchdowns in a 49-35 victory over Carolina.

The next time Smith takes the field, it will be in front of a national television audience, when Detroit tries to end Green Bay's unbeaten run Thursday in a Thanksgiving showdown. And yes, this is one player who can certainly appreciate the symbolism of that holiday.

"The chance to be in the NFL, the chance that God blessed me with another opportunity, is what I'm thankful for," Smith said.

Born in Miami, Smith played both running back and safety at Southridge High School, where he was also an academic honor roll student. As a freshman at Central Florida in 2005, he made an immediate impact, rushing for 1,178 yards.

Two seasons later, Smith carried the ball a staggering 450 times for 2,567 yards, finishing 61 yards shy of the single-season record held by another college star who went on to play for the Lions: Barry Sanders.

Smith turned pro after that, joining a 2008 draft loaded with outstanding running backs. Chris Johnson, Darren McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall, Matt Forte, Ray Rice and Jamaal Charles were all picked that year.

For a while, Smith looked like he belonged in that class. Taken in the third round, he ran for 976 yards as a rookie, showing promise even while the Lions became the first NFL team to go 0-16.

He was a big part of the offense again in 2009, but toward the end of that season, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Smith came back slowly last year and played in six games, but a thumb injury ended his season in November.

When the Lions let him go, Smith wasn't surprised. He said he respected the team's decision, but the timing clearly wasn't good. Smith first had to wait out the lockout, then try to catch on somewhere else

"With the lockout this year and short training camps and things like that, it was really a terrible situation for him in trying to come back," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "Credit to Kevin. He never lost faith, he persevered."

Smith's routine was simple: wake up at 7 a.m., work out until noon. Then he'd go home and play with his son, who is now 18 months old.

Smith tried out for several teams ? he said about a half-dozen brought him in ? but the season dragged on, and he still had nowhere to play. After all his injuries, it wasn't clear if Smith would be heard from again in the NFL.

"I think it was pretty hard on my mom, but she didn't really show any weakness. She's a strong woman. I kind of get that from her. I can honestly say she missed the game as much as I did," Smith said. "She kept a positive attitude. She knew that I would get another shot. She believed."

Looking back, he's realistic about what the future could have held.

"I think I was going to head back to school. The bills still got to get paid, so probably get a job and see what happens the next year," Smith said. "I try not to think too far ahead. In that situation, you don't want to have the attitude of, 'What if I don't get in?' or 'What if nobody calls me?'"

Smith instead focused on staying in shape, fighting the urge to play general manager in his head.

"That right there drove me crazy more than anything ? trying to keep track of, 'He goes down here, well, why wouldn't they pick me up here?'" Smith said. "It's a crazy business, but you get an opportunity and then maybe you get a chance to show some people that maybe they slept on you when they had a chance to pick you up."

While Smith was trying to show he could contribute to an NFL team, the Lions were in the thick of the playoff race after winning their first five games. With quarterback Matthew Stafford finally healthy, Detroit's offense was clicking, but the lack of a consistent running game was a concern.

Rookie Mikel Leshoure tore his left Achilles tendon before the season even started, and Jahvid Best has been hampered by concussion problems. The Lions were thin at running back, and earlier this month, they turned to Smith.

"Any time that you're a player, you realize what an honor and privilege it is to play in the NFL," Schwartz said. "When you're faced with that being gone, maybe it becomes even more so. It just shows you Kevin is very appreciative of what he has in life and how he got here. I don't think there's any room for bitterness."

When the Lions fell behind early Sunday, Smith helped turn the game around, leading Detroit down the field almost by himself with a 43-yard run and a 28-yard touchdown catch. He went on to rush for 140 yards ? more than he had all of last season.

"He played great," Stafford said. "He was breaking tackles, doing a great job picking up blitzes in the pass game, and when his guy didn't come, he was getting out, making some catches and getting yards after the catch. If we can get that kind of effort out of him every week, obviously it would be a great thing."

Fresh legs may be Smith's biggest asset right now, and he can still impress with his vision and cutting ability. On Detroit's final scoring play last weekend, the 6-foot-1, 217-pound Smith took a handoff and danced to the right, avoiding a charging tackler before turning upfield. He then sprinted by another defender and juked his way past one more before trotting into the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown that sealed the win.

Smith was chosen NFC offensive player of the week by the NFL, and he might be the biggest X-factor when the Lions (7-3) host the Packers (10-0). He's still settling in back in Detroit, and his family isn't expected to be in attendance on Thanksgiving. Smith says he's heading home after the game.

It may not be a perfect arrangement, but Smith has an opportunity now, a chance to enjoy a gratifying finish to a year that began amid so much uncertainty.

"I could have been anywhere. I could have went to another team and played and had a 2-7 record and been home at the end of the season," Smith said. "I'm right back here where I'm familiar. They're familiar with me. They trust me. I trust them. We're right in the thick of things."

Big Time Rush To Sing National Anthem On Thanksgiving

Nickelodeon stars will precede Dallas Cowboys/ Miami Dolphins game.
By Christina Garibaldi

Big Time Rush
Photo: MTV News

To say this month has been a "Big Time Rush" for James Maslow, Logan Henderson, Carlos Pena and Kendall Schmidt is an understatement. The boys from the hit Nickelodeon show released their sophomore album, Elevated, on Monday, just wrapped up shooting their new flick ("Big Time Movie") and on Thanksgiving, they will be singing the National Anthem before the start of the football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins.

MTV News caught up with Big Time Rush on Tuesday (November 22) to talk about their big Turkey Day performance.

"We are going to Dallas, which is where I grew up pretty much for 18 years of my life," Henderson said about performing in front of his hometown crowd at Cowboys Stadium.

Most of the members of Big Time Rush are big-time Cowboys fans. "It's American's team," Schmidt said, while Maslow added, "Every American is a Cowboys fan."

Not so fast, James: It seems Pena is torn between rooting for Dallas or his hometown team, the Dolphins. "I like Miami and the Dolphins; they're my home team," Pena explained. "But the Cowboys gave me this job to sing the National Anthem, so, who do you go with?"

Well, Carlos, you might have a fellow Dolphins fan in Miami resident Enrique Iglesias, who will be performing the halftime show.

If you are too busy with Thanksgiving Day plans to catch Big Time Rush in action, the group is planning to take their act on the road for their "Better With U" Tour. The band's first United States tour will kick off in February.

Will you watch Big Time Rush sing the National Anthem? Let us know in the comments!

Do Android Antivirus Apps Actually Do Anything? [Security]

Do Android Antivirus Apps Actually Do Anything? If you've been watching tech news headlines over the past week, you've likely heard that Android malware is growing at an alarming rate, up something like 472% from May of this year. Should you be worried and run off to purchase and install an antivirus package for your Android phone? Not so fast, there's just as much controversy over those utilities as there is over the malware itself.

Yes, Malware for Android Is Real, and It's Growing

The one thing that can't be refuted is that the amount of malware for the Android platform has skyrocketed. After all, it's only natural for malware authors to target one of the most popular and fastest growing mobile platforms. Juniper's Global Threat Center, the group that created the report and this infographic that's been raising eyebrows, points out that the flood of Android malware can be broken in to two categories.

  • Do Android Antivirus Apps Actually Do Anything?
  • SMS Trojans. SMS Trojans operate in the background of normal applications, sending SMS messages to premium rate numbers, or numbers that charge you each time an SMS is sent to them. The same way you can send an text message to vote for an outcome on a television show (and conveniently pay the show a fee for sending that message), these trojans send messages to numbers?often international?owned by the attacker. In fact, you don't even notice the unusual behavior until you review your cell phone bill, or check your account to see if there's been recent SMS activity. Of course, by the time you see it, the messages have already been sent, and your account has already been billed. SMS trojans account for just less than half of all Android malware.
  • Spyware. The lion's share of Android malware is actually spyware. Just more than half are applications that have deep access and permissions to your system, or which exploit vulnerabilities in Android to gain root access to the device, collect information about the device and the user, and then send it back to the app's developer. Many of those applications masquerade as legitimate ones, like a recent app that looked so much like the official Netflix app that it was hard to tell the difference.

Juniper isn't the only security research firm that's highlighted the threat. A new report from McAfee, highlighted over at Neowin, says the same thing. Both research firms say that the bulk of the malware is being written by the same authors who were responsible for similar attacks against old Windows Mobile and Symbian devices years ago. In essence, it's not that Android has suddenly drawn in a new generation of malcontents, but that the older, more vulnerable platforms aren't as interesting anymore, and Android's meteoric rise and open architecture make it an attractive target.

No, Mobile Anti-Malware Utilities for Android are Not Perfect, or Even the Same Protection You Get on the Desktop

To combat the mobile malware threat, a number of security firms have released their own utilities designed to keep you safe. Researchers will tell you that you need some kind of protection to keep your phone and the data on it safe and secure. That may be true, but not everyone is taking research firms like Symantec, McAfee, and Juniper at their word. Google's Chief Evangelist, Chris DiBona, called out researchers for being charlatans and scammers and accused them of peddling "scareware." Admittedly, DiBona isn't exactly an impartial observer, but there may be something to his concerns.

Unfortunately, even though most mobile security tools do offer valuable features like data backup, remote wipe, remote lock, and GPS tracking, DiBona notes that even though there's been a rise in malware for the Android platform, there has yet to be an open and spreading infection among Android devices like we've seen on desktop computers. Part of the issue is that there's no simple transmission method between mobile devices in the wild. Despite DiBona's concerns, security researchers say that mobile devices are essentially handheld computers, and that they carry a great deal of information about us that identity thieves would consider valuable.

Even so, security products available for Android don't offer the same level of protection that desktop security tools offer. There's no active scanning of files or applications that enter memory, or regular checking of applications that are downloaded and installed. You can't just install a mobile security suite on your Android phone and assume you'll be safe regardless of what you do. Until security tools mature, the real weapon you have against Android malware is common sense. Don't install applications from unusual or suspicious sources and only install apps from the Android market or other trusted markets. Make sure to evaluate the permissions required by the apps you install before you install them or allow them to auto-update. Keep a close watch on your SMS and data activity even in between billing cycles, and raise any issues to your carrier as soon as you see them.

The Verdict

Well, the question we started with was: Do Android antivirus apps actually do anything? The simple answer is yes. They can be helpful, even if they're not bulletproof or even as protective as their desktop counterparts are. There's a ton of Android malware out there, but the upside to the whole affair is that it's not terribly easy to get, if you use your phone normally. Also, even if the malware threat to Android is a bit overinflated right now, security companies that are eager to sell you an antivirus package or app for your mobile device are at least providing a partially useful service.

Even if their apps aren't ready for prime time to combat malware in the wild, they do give you other useful tools , like remote tracking or data wipe if your phone has been lost or stolen, backup for all of your files and data, and more. At the same time, some apps have those same features for free. If you've installed Norton Mobile Security or McAfee Wavesecure, there's no need to uninstall it and ask for your money back. The utilities will only get better with time. Still, keep in mind that no mobile security app is a replacement for common sense.

Penn State trustees panel sets news conference Monday (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A special committee formed by Penn State trustees to investigate the university's actions after reports of child sex abuse by a former football coach said it will hold a news conference Monday in connection with its investigation.

The special committee was announced days after the November 5 announcement that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was accused by a grand jury of sexually abusing eight young boys over 15 years. Sandusky faces 40 charges.

The trustees fired legendary football coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier within days of announcing the special committee. The school's athletic director and another official, both charged with perjury by the grand jury, have also stepped down over the scandal.

Sandusky, 67, retired as a Penn State football coach in 1999 but continued to have access to the university's facilities as recently as a few weeks ago.

Investigations of the allegations which have shaken the college football world and state of Pennsylvania are continuing by prosecutors, the university, the U.S. Department of Education and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Sandusky is alleged to have met many of the boys through The Second Mile, a charity he started in 1977, which is also carrying out an investigation of the charges.

Trustees named Ken Frazier, president and CEO of Merck, to chair the special committee that was appointed to investigate "the circumstances that gave rise to the grand jury report."

The special committee is expected to be made up of a majority of university trustees, plus faculty, students and alumni.

How Social Media Revived The Muppets (Mashable)

The Muppets are back! On Nov. 23, Walt Disney Pictures is bringing its next live-action Muppet film, aptly-named The Muppets, to movie theatres across the country. The film release is the culmination of a multi-pronged marketing campaign that has embraced the social and digital spheres, and in the process, helped reinvigorate the Muppet brand.

It's rare to see such solid execution on so many digital and social channels and for that reason, we wanted to take a deeper look at the various aspects of Disney's and The Muppets Studios' efforts.

Going Viral to Revive Interest in a Brand

Over the last two years, The Muppet Studios has embarked on a proactive social and viral campaign. It all started with an epic cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", and was followed by more songs, iPhone apps and responses to episodes of Internet backlash with just the right amount of aplomb and visual humor.

In retrospect, the timing of these viral video endeavors was perfect. It coincided with the original announcement that a new Muppet film would be coming to theaters.

Getting the Right People Involved

The key to a successful project, especially when it involves a storied and beloved brand, is having the right people on board.

Jason Segel co-wrote the script for the film alongside his Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller. If you've seen Marshall, you know why this is important. Both men are bonafide Muppet fanatics and already had a working relationship with the Jim Henson Company.

After Disney decided to greenlight the project, two members of Flight of the Conchords -- James Bobin and Bret McKenzie -- signed on to direct and handle music supervising duties. Amy Adams also signed on to star in the film alongside Segel, Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest.

As a huge fan of The Muppets, I know my interest in the film was greatly enhanced by the fact that Segel was so involved with the script and the storyline. There is a sense of trust that the brand, characters and situations will be handled properly.

Using Social Effectively

Over the last eight months, Walt Disney Pictures has done a lot to virally and socially promote The Muppets across social channels.

In fact, we would go as far as to say that the campaign for The Muppets is one of the most socially savvy we have seen from any studio for a major release window. Let's take a look at some of the ways social and digital have come together to promote the film, connect fans and spread the word.

Facebook

The official Muppets Facebook page has more than 1.1 million fans and individual characters like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and Animal have their own fan pages and campaigns. The Facebook pages have been well-utilized to spread informational and video content.

Disney also created The Muppets Fan-A-Thon on Facebook to entice fans to "Like" various characters, pages and videos in a bid to unlock advance screenings. Cheekily asking for "1 bazillion likes," the campaign has yielded over 2 million likes since it started.

Twitter

The Disney acquired the game maker Tapulous back in 2010, so it makes sense that Tap Tap Muppets would hit iOS. Mobile video app Viddy also has special pack that lets users insert characters from The Muppets into their videos.

Google+

The Muppets was one of the first brands to join Google+ and its YouTube has had a huge role to play in promoting the film and the brand itself.

Not only have Disney and Muppets Studios used YouTube to great effect in creating viral music videos, they also created movie trailer parodies spoofing other blockbuster films like The Hangover Part II and The Green Lantern.

Most recently, YouTube was used to release a new video preview of The Muppets Soundtrack, using commenters from negative YouTube users to pepper the soundtrack preview. We love it.

Saturday Night Live

Of course, no media campaign would be complete without involving traditional outlets. Jason Segel hosted Saturday Night Live last night and his monologue included some special guests (above).

The Box Office Test

Early reviews for The Muppets are overwhelmingly positive, and the film is tracking to be a big success at the box office. Still, we'll have to wait until the 23rd to see if all the social campaigning and digital interaction have paid off.

I'm going to see The Muppets over the holiday weekend. What about you?
