tangerine trees and marmalade skies - from an atlas of the difficult ...

Adrienne Rich was eighty two, and had led such a fulfilling life. I feel sad that I'm only taking an active interest in her work after her passing - but then again, everyone does that.

Considering Adrienne Rich and the other lesbian writers I've come across (Gertrude Stein, Jeanette Winterson, Ali Smith, Virginia Woolf), I can't help but wonder why gay literature, which includes non-fiction essays, is so female-dominated. There are plenty of brilliant male writers who are gay, but they never seem to explicitly write about homosexuality. Literature that follows a lesbian narrative is a fairly new phenomenon, given that homosexuality was hardly ever discussed in the early nineties, but even in recent years there have been few novels or poems that talk about gay men.

The cause for this could be the relation between the fight for gay rights and the feminist movement. These women are writing for both causes - as a woman and a lesbian, they are doubly disenfranchised, and hence have less to lose. Moreover, lesbians traditionally did not have as much freedom to pursue relationships as gay men did, but neither were they condemned as harshly for doing so - they were viewed to be a less harmful, less significant component of society. Even now, the aggression against gay men is much greater than that against gay women. Majority of the kids who commit suicide after being bullied for their sexual orientation are male; politically, conservatives tend to direct their anti-gay hate towards the men, as can be seen from dumbass churches protesting against gays in the military, or laws forbidding sex between men but not women. Hence, gay male writers may feel like they are up against serious societal animosity should they write about sexual orientation.

Then again, this hostility towards gay men does not deter many of them from rising to prominence in other fields like television or art. I suppose there's the distinction between allowing a gay man to act or write, and portraying a gay character in a movie or book. In the case of novels, I think the homosexual community is definitely under-represented, but I don't understand why there are fewer stories about gay men than there are about lesbians. (In Singapore it's different though, most of the prominent local writers are gay.) Is there something inherently more 'artistic' or appealing about reading lesbian literature? Is the bending of gender roles more interesting from a woman's perspective? I don't think so, and yet I wouldn't know. I wish there was an answer to this, or at least brilliant book about gay men to prove me wrong. You get snatches of a gay man's narrative, undertones of his sexuality (in Tennessee Williams perhaps), but these are rarely brought to light.

Anyway, back to Adrienne Rich. I think this is a very good poem about poetry - her introspection is often acute (see Atlas). The title is interesting!:

A Valediction Forbidding Mourning

My swirling wants. Your frozen lips.
The grammar turned and attacked me.
Themes, written under duress.
Emptiness of the notations.

They gave me a drug that slowed the healing of wounds.

I want you to see this before I leave:
the experience of repetition as death
the failure of criticism to locate the pain
the poster in the bus that said:
my bleeding is under control

A red plant in a cemetery of plastic wreaths.

A last attempt: the language is a dialect called metaphor.
These images go unglossed: hair, glacier, flashlight.
When I think of a landscape I am thinking of a time.
When I talk of taking a trip I mean forever.
I could say: those mountains have a meaning
but further than that I could not say.

To do something very common, in my own way.

Home Improvement Companies | House Improvements

Home improvement companies have grown increasingly in demand for a number of reasons. First of all, the recession saw a lot of home improvement projects being undertaken by home owners. The reason for this is that there were fewer home buyers, therefore homeowners decided to invest time and money into their homes. This is a long term plan which makes such investment a prudent one.

As a result, home improvement has become a huge niche which has grown past the DIY stage, when it was just a hobby. Different areas of the house are being tackled in home improvement projects to add value to the house and as investments in the houses. Homeowners have therefore realized the benefit of having these projects professionally and expertly handled.

Home improvement companies are varied and are as wide as the niche itself.

They range from the architects and interior designers who are involved in the planning of a home improvement project, to those that provide such services as remodeling, painting and plumbing. Then there are the companies that provide the materials needed for a home improvement projects. Some companies combine all these functions into their services so that they serve as a one-stop shop for all things home improvement.

If you decide to make use of a home improvement company that provides all your home improvement needs, you need to make sure that all their contractors have current licenses to operate within the area your home is located.

Also, it is always best to purchase the materials you need for your home improvement projects from a reputable home improvement company.

If that company has a reputation for quality materials in the industry, you are very likely to get the best materials and advice from them. They are conversant with the different types of materials and their functions and can advice you appropriately. Furthermore, because of their reputation, they are more likely to have a really good warranty program should anything go wrong with your materials.

Most home improvement companies will give you a free estimate before you begin your home improvement project. This is very important when you are planning your project because home improvement projects are notorious for becoming increasingly expensive as you go on if you fail to plan and have an estimate in the first place.

It is easy to think that home improvement should be a DIY project and if you have some experience in handling DIY projects, this is not a bad thing. However, using a home improvement company could save you time and money, which you could lose from mistakes you might make along the way. If you are willing to make the mistakes and learn as you go, home improvement companies will also come in handy with advice and quality products.

Intuit shows off MicroMint concept app for the WIMM One smartwatch, we go hands-on

Given the amount of time we spent with the WIMM One smartwatch, you'd think we would have had enough fodder for a full-blown review. Alas, though, one critical piece was missing: apps. Not test apps, like a balance ball game, but honest to goodness apps from major third-party developers. As it happens, the app store still isn't live yet, but we did get to check out a concept app from Intuit, the company behind Mint.com (no TurboTax for this 1.41-inch display, sorry).

What can we say? When a device has a screen this tiny, the elevator pitch is going to be mighty brief. Here's how MicroMint works: just swipe left to right to see your balances for different accounts. There's no limit to how many it can display, and when you reach the end of the list, the app will just start cycling through again. As you can see in the video demo below, the app's performance is limited by the watch's 667MHz ARM11 CPU and 256MB RAM, which is to say you'll notice some lag as you swipe from one bank balance to another. And that's it. This is all the app does; don't expect to take advantage of Mint's other features, like budget-planning and mapping out savings goals (not that you'd want any graphs or itemized lists crammed onto that 160x160 screen).

For now, of course, this concept app is just that, a prototype. Intuit won't commit to releasing it, much less share any sort of timeline. Interestingly, though, David Siegel on Intuit's development team suggested to us that the app might be of more use when WIMM releases its next-gen watch with NFC. With that radio on board, he says, the app could potentially allow not just for balance-checking, but credit card payments as well. Additionally, the outfit is mulling a similar app for the Sony SmartWatch, which also runs Android and supports Java-based apps. The only development hiccup, he says, would be adapting the app for Sony-specific APIs. That's a whole lot of ifs for one paragraph, though, so for now we'll leave you with a super quick hands-on video, just past the break.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

Terror in Europe fuels immigration tensions

LONDON (AP) ? An al-Qaida-inspired gunman kills paratroopers and Jewish children in southern France. A far-right fanatic enraged by Muslim immigration guns down dozens of youths at a summer camp in Norway.

Two atrocities in the space of the year, coming from opposite ends of the spectrum, are raising fears across Europe that a growing climate of ethnic and religious hostility is inspiring extremist violence ? and creating the conditions for deadly clashes.

The attacks in France and Norway represent the most horrific extremes of two trends of intolerance troubling Europe: strengthening far-right sentiment that has sometimes bled into the mainstream, and growing Islamic radicalization in Europe's disadvantaged, immigrant-heavy neighborhoods.

With Europe still stunned by last week's killings in Toulouse, France, a loosely knit group of xenophobic "defense leagues" plans to rally in Denmark Saturday against what they call the growing Islamic presence in western Europe.

The rally was organized by one of the rising forces of Europe's far-right scene ? the Danish Defense League. It's backed by the English Defense League, which gained prominence in Britain amid urban rioting last summer. Similar groups from Russia, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Sweden are expected.

Danish intelligence services expect up to 700 of these strident, anti-Muslim "counter-Jihadists." A counter-demonstration is anticipated to draw several thousand people. Police vow to keep the two groups apart. But the clashing views on display show Europe's heightened polarization.

"These terrorist events are creating sparks, and a small spark can set off a huge fire," said Magnus Ranstorp, research director of the Center for Asymmetric Threat Studies in Sweden. "It can set off huge social polarization, and this is what the terrorists want to achieve. Now there is an increased rightwing climate ? the counter-jihad movement ? feeding off these Islamophobic forces."

The mood is volatile, Ranstrop said, made more so by the methods of the killers ? citing how in France, Mohamed Merah shot video of his attacks that was mailed to the Al-Jazeera television network.

"You have the counter-jihad movement, and on the other side you have an old al-Qaida structure giving out directives for people to carry out their own personal jihads by solo terrorist activity. The manner in which you carry out these attacks matters: Recording them, sending films to Al-Jazeera, shooting people execution style, all to create polarization and revulsion, to create an overreaction."

For decades, western Europe has been the envy of the world with its high standard of living and tolerant social climate. Today, Europe is gripped by a profound economic crisis and festering conflict over immigration, religion and cultural identity.

Tensions over immigration from northern Africa and other countries with large Islamic populations have fueled the rise of far-right movements across Europe. In France, the ultranationlist National Front is expected to make gains in upcoming presidential and legislative elections. Xenophobic parties in Austria, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands have all gained support in recent years.

As anti-immigration rhetoric grows more strident, ideas that were once considered on the fringes of political dialogue have entered the mainstream ? with French President Nicolas Sarkozy often seeming to borrow from National Front rhetoric as he campaigns for re-election.

At the same time, anti-Western diatribes on the Internet and sometimes in local mosques have played a role in radicalizing some young Muslims in Europe, even as Muslim community leaders try to steer young people toward productive futures. The long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have also enflamed passions among Muslims.

Over the past year, Europe has suffered deadly manifestations of these tensions with the France attacks and the July massacre in Norway carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, who slaughtered 77 people with a bomb in Oslo followed by a shooting rampage at a Labor Party youth camp on an island retreat.

The two horrors have drawn inevitable comparisons.

Both killers had a terrifying sense of theater. Breveik's island rampage, in which he picked off the trapped children one at a time, seemed straight out of a horror movie. The French police account of Merah's last stand, his Colt .45 blazing as he jumped from the balcony, seems inspired by an action film.

Initial reactions to the attacks point to the ambiguities swirling around Europe's immigration debate.

When Breveik's deadly bomb ripped through the Norwegian capital on July 22, many counterterrorism experts assumed Muslim radicals were behind the blast. Similarly, many initially suspected that the French killings might be the work of a far-right fanatic.

The bloodshed carried out by both extremes in the heated immigration debated raises the specter of clashes between the two. There already have been street scuffles between the English Defense League and radical Islamists in Britain ? although none has escalated into major violence.

Nicolas Lebourg, a historian who studies the far-right at Perpignan University in southern France, said that both Breivik and Merah were products of an increasingly polarized Europe.

"For people who are a little fragile, people who are a little sensitive ... we're overheating them by telling them that there's this cosmic war between good and evil," Lebourg said.

Newly identified stem cells may hold clues to colon cancer

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers have identified a new population of intestinal stem cells that may hold clues to the origin of colorectal cancer.

This new stem cell population, reported March 30 in the journal Cell, appears to be relatively quiescent (inactive) ? in contrast to the recent discovery of intestinal stem cells that multiply rapidly ? and is marked by a protein, Lrig1, that may act as a "brake" on cell growth and proliferation.

The researchers have also developed a new and clinically relevant mouse model of colorectal cancer that investigators can now use to better understand where and how the disease arises, as well as for probing new therapeutic targets.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. These tumors are thought to arise from a series of mutations in intestinal stem cells, which are long-lived, self-renewing cells that gives rise to all cell types in the intestinal tract.

For more than 30 years, scientists believed that intestinal stem cells were primarily quiescent, proliferating only rarely in order to protect the tissue against cancer. Then, in 2007, researchers reported finding a population of intestinal stem cells (marked by the molecule Lgr5) that were highly proliferative.

Those findings "really changed the way we think about intestinal stem cells," said Robert Coffey, Jr., M.D., Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, co-chair of Vanderbilt's Epithelial Biology Center and senior author on the study.

"It came to so dominate the field that it raised the question about whether quiescent stem cells even exist?and that's where we enter into the picture."

Coffey's lab studies the epidermal growth factor (EGF) signaling pathway ? which includes a family of receptors known as ErbBs ? and its role in cancers of epithelial tissues, like the intestinal tract.

Postdoctoral fellow Anne Powell, Ph.D., led the recent experiments showing that Lrig1, a molecule that regulates ErbB activity, is present in intestinal cells that have the qualities of stem cells (self-renewal, and the ability to produce all the cells of the intestine).

"Essentially, what we show is that the Lrig1-expressing cells are stem cells and they are largely quiescent," Powell said. "We also show that they're distinct from the Lgr5-expressing stem cells that had become a sort of 'hallmark' stem cell population?with different gene expression profiles and different proliferative status."

They also showed that Lrig1 is not only a marker of intestinal stem cells, but also acts as a tumor suppressor and inhibits the growth and proliferative signals of the ErbB family ? acting as a sort of "brake" on cell proliferation that can lead to cancer.

Postdoctoral fellow Yang Wang, Ph.D., eliminated Lrig1 in mice and showed that nearly all of those mice developed intestinal tumors, providing further evidence suggesting that Lrig1 functions as a tumor suppressor.

The findings underscore the importance of ErbB signaling in the behavior of intestinal stem cells from which colorectal cancer may arise.

Most exciting, said Coffey, is that the mouse model his lab has generated as a part of these studies is one of the only mouse models to develop tumors in section of the intestines where most human tumors develop: the colon. One additional advantage of this model, in contrast to others, is that the tumors develop quickly and can be easily monitored with endoscopy, which will make it easier to assess how therapeutic interventions are working.

"We are fairly confident that this will be the 'go-to' model to study colon cancer in mice for the foreseeable future," Coffey said.

Restaurant Industry Outlook Improves as Restaurant Performance

Restaurant Industry Outlook Improves as Restaurant Performance

Restaurant Industry Outlook Improves as Restaurant Performance Index Stood Above 100 for 4th Consecutive Month

Restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales for the ninth consecutive month; Operators expect sales and staffing levels to rise in the coming months

WASHINGTON, March 30, 2012 - Bolstered by positive same-store sales and traffic results and an optimistic outlook among restaurant operators, the National Restaurant Association?sRestaurant Performance Index (RPI) remained above 100 for the fourth consecutive month in February.? The RPI - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 101.9 in February, up 0.6 percent from January?s level of 101.3.? In addition, the RPI stood solidly above the 100 threshold in February, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators.

?Buoyed by continued gains in national employment and an extra day in February as a result of Leap Year, a solid majority of restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales and traffic results,? said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the Research and Knowledge Group for the Association.? ?In addition, restaurant operators are bullish about sales growth in the months ahead, while their outlook for the economy remains cautiously optimistic.?

?Perhaps the most positive indicator is the optimistic outlook for staffing levels in the months ahead,? Riehle added.? ?Only seven percent of restaurant operators expect to reduce staffing levels in the next six months, the lowest level in nearly eight years.??

The RPI is constructed so that the health of the restaurant industry is measured in relation to a steady-state level of 100.? Index values above 100 indicate that key industry indicators are in a period of expansion, while index values below 100 represent a period of contraction for key industry indicators.?

The Current Situation Index, which measures current trends in four industry indicators (same-store sales, traffic, labor and capital expenditures), stood at 101.9 in February - up 1.3 percent from January?s level of 100.6.? In addition, the Current Situation Index stood above 100 for the fourth consecutive month, which signifies expansion in the current situation indicators.?

Restaurant operators reported positive same-store sales for the ninth consecutive month in February, bolstered by an extra day in February as a result of Leap Year.? Sixty-three percent of restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain between February 2011 and February 2012, up from 56 percent who reported a sales gain in January.? In comparison, just 18 percent of operators reported lower same-store sales in February, down from 26 percent who reported similarly in January.?

Restaurant operators also reported solid customer traffic results in February.? Fifty-five percent of restaurant operators reported higher customer traffic levels between February 2011 and February 2012, while just 19 percent reported a traffic decline.? In January, 46 percent of operators reported higher customer traffic, while 30 percent reported a traffic decline.

Along with steadily positive sales and traffic results, restaurant operators reported an uptick in capital spending activity.? Forty-seven percent of operators said they made a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling during the last three months, up from 42 percent who reported similarly last month.

The Expectations Index, which measures restaurant operators? six-month outlook for four industry indicators (same-store sales, employees, capital expenditures and business conditions), stood at 102.0 in February - essentially unchanged from January?s level of 102.1.? February marked the sixth consecutive month that the Expectations Index stood above 100, which represents an optimistic outlook among restaurant operators for business conditions in the months ahead.? ?

For the third consecutive month, a majority of restaurant operators expect their sales to be higher in the coming months.? Fifty-three percent of restaurant operators expect to have higher sales in six months (compared to the same period in the previous year), matching the proportion who reported similarly last month.? In comparison, only nine percent of restaurant operators expect their sales volume in six months to be lower than it was during the same period in the previous year, up slightly from seven percent who reported similarly last month.

Restaurant operators are also generally optimistic about the direction of the overall economy.? Thirty-five percent of restaurant operators said they expect economic conditions to improve in six months, down slightly from 37 percent last month.? In comparison, 14 percent of operators said they expect economic conditions to worsen in the next six months, up slightly from 11 percent who reported similarly last month.?

For the fifth consecutive month, restaurant operators reported higher expectations for staffing levels in the months ahead.? Twenty-four percent of restaurant operators plan to increase staffing levels in six months (compared to the same period in the previous year), while just seven percent said they expect to reduce staffing levels in six months.?

Along with a positive outlook for sales and staffing levels, restaurant operators also continue to plan for capital spending in the months ahead.? Forty-nine percent of restaurant operators plan to make a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling in the next six months, essentially unchanged from the proportion reporting similarly last month.?

The RPI is based on the responses to the National Restaurant Association?s Restaurant Industry Tracking Survey, which is fielded monthly among restaurant operators nationwide on a variety of indicators including sales, traffic, labor, and capital expenditures. The full report and a video summary are available online.

The RPI is released on the last business day of each month, and more detailed data and analysis can be found on Restaurant TrendMapper (http://www.restaurant.org/trendmapper), the Association?s subscription-based service that provides detailed analysis of restaurant industry trends.

Founded in 1919, the National Restaurant Association is the leading business association for the restaurant industry, which comprises 970,000 restaurant and foodservice outlets and a workforce of nearly 13 million employees. We represent the industry in Washington, D.C., and advocate on its behalf. We operate the industry?s largest trade show (NRA Show May 5-8, 2012, in Chicago); leading food safety training and certification program (ServSafe); unique career-building high school program (the NRAEF?s ProStart, including the National ProStart Invitational April 27-29, 2012, in Baltimore, Md.); as well as the Kids LiveWell program promoting healthful kids? menu options. Travel in traffic estimates return to Google Maps, promises not to suck this time

time in traffic
You might remember that, once upon a time, Google Maps offered you two estimates for your travel time -- ideal and in traffic. The problem was, Big G's estimates weren't so great. So, the web giant quietly removed the feature last year and simply started providing traffic-free travel times. Well, trip times in traffic are back, and this time Google promises their guess work won't suck. Using both live and historic traffic data Google Maps now offers an estimate of how long your trip will take in current conditions, directly under the congestion-free time. Why seniors should relocate to retirement houses?

One should retire from work and not life. Adult couples over 50 need discourage themselves from leading an active life as they can relocate to retirement houses and relive the sensation of their golden days. Aging shouldn?t affect your mind and you should be as ambitious at the age of 50 as you were in 25. You can do many things after retiring from work. For instance you can earn degrees and start your own venture. If you love reading and writing then you can read many books and write novels after retiring from work. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Part of independent living communities, retirement houses are designed, decorated and furnished with senior living in mind. These homes are different from ordinary dwellings and this you would recognize only after visiting a home for seniors.

These homes come complete with modern facilities like round the clock power backup, broadband connectivity, fresh water and full kitchen. Also the seniors can get assistance from friendly staff. You can live like a newly married couple in your home as there you will no young couple around you. In other words, you would live with like minded people with whom you could share your success stories and sweet memories.

If you are planning to go on second honeymoon after retiring from work then you should consider relocating to one of the elegantly furnished retirement houses. There are many independent living communities in Canada and you won?t find any difficulty in locating a community in your province. You can use Internet to search an affordable independent living community in your province.

Money would be a concern for your after retiring from work but there are no worries as a majority of communities provide affordable homes. Start saving money from today so that you can enjoy your life to the full after retiring from work.

After becoming a resident of an independent living community, you would enjoy access to a number of facilities including golf course, swimming pools and lush green grounds. The communities also offer libraries and computer rooms for learned people. The games room would not only provide you hours of unlimited fun and entertainment but also help you sharpen your mind. The good thing is that there would be no one to stop you from doing your favorite things. All you need to do to enjoy your life to the full after retiring from work is relocating to one of the retirement houses.

Performing arts centre project gets new life - Strathroy Age Dispatch ...

Posted 1 day ago

A commitment from the municipality has given a local performing arts project new life and focus.

Strathroy-Caradoc council approved a request by the Strathroy Wright Family Performing Arts and Entertainment Centre Foundation to extend their commitment not sell the vacant lots located on Front Street.

According to Dr. Mary Wright, her group is in the process of forming a foundation to support the establishment and operation of a performing arts centre in the downtown core.

?The vacant lots are the ideal spot for the centre,? said Dr. Wright. ?All the preliminary work already completed is based on that site.?

Over new several months, the group will work towards creating the new foundation and getting the project back on track.

?We are just in the early stages,? said Dr. Wright. ?But things are progressing.?

Mass Effect 3 Datapad

Play Mass Effect 3 for any length of time and you?ll encounter dozens of ?datapads?in the game. These little tablet-like devices are used in the popular game?s universe for communicating information. So it makes sense that in devising tie-ins, Electronic Arts would look first toward the similar devices in our world. The result is Mass Effect 3 Datapad, an app that lets you extend your experience with the game onto mobile devices?and help you play the game better. The free app doesn?t do a lot, and much of what it does will be of limited use even to hard-core players. But it captures just enough of the game's fun and flavor to be worth a look.

iPad into Datapad
If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch (sorry everyone else?it?s only available for Apple devices), getting started with Mass Effect 3 Datapad is as easy as downloading it from the App Store and linking it to your Origin account. Once you've done that, you have full access to all five options on the main menu, which is decorated with a full-size photo from a rotating roster of key locations within the Mass Effect galaxy (Thessia, Illium, Citadel, and so on), along with a clock (in a large, easy-to-read, ?futuristic? font), so you can tell at a glance exactly how long you?ve been playing. (No, this may not necessarily be a plus for everyone.)

Of most interest to completist players will be Galaxy at War. This lets you raise your Galactic Readiness Rating within the game, and therefore your Effective Military Strength?the number that determines how well you?ll fare against the Reapers in the final battle for Earth (and thus what ending you?ll achieve). You do this by sending fleets (you start with two) on missions within the five major sectors of the Milky Way. Each sector offers three possible locations, and a mission in each location will take a different amount of time to complete (with one, three, and five hours being typical launching pads per sector?they start taking longer as you go) and reward you with a Readiness Rating improvement based on the mission length. Upon completion, simply tap the fleet to send it back to ?base,? collect your improvement and some credits for your trouble, then you're free to deploy the fleet again to any location that?s free.

Galaxy at War
You can buy upgrades to streamline the process: one reduces the time fleets need to complete missions, one buys you up to three additional fleets, one adds layers of shielding to your ships (if a fleet is damaged during a mission, you must wait an hour before you can deploy it again), and one ups the amount of Readiness Rating you receive per mission. But that?s it. There are no tactics to hash out, no decision to make, no Paragon or Renegade dilemmas to ponder. You?ll spend all your time within Galaxy at War tapping and waiting (with a considerable emphasis on the latter)?and because readiness per sector degrades over time, you'll need to keep coming back if you want to keep your numbers high.

It may not be much, but it's more active participation than the rest of the app requires. The Codex option brings up an attractive illustrated encyclopedia of crucial game information, complete with voice narration of entries, very similar to the one that's in Mass Effect 3 itself. Media lets you watch three of the game's trailer videos and view nearly 30 photos of scenes and characters from the game. The Alliance News option does the least: It merely downloads and displays unthreaded entries from the game?s official Twitter feed (@masseffect)?but you can?t interact with anyone through it, you can just read the tweets (which, because most are replies to other users, are usually less that scintillating).

Mass Effect Mail
At least there?s some originality attached to the final option: Mail. As you progress through Mass Effect 3, you?ll receive ?messages? from characters in the game that refer to events you've experienced?one of your squadmates might send you a note commenting on some aspect of a mission, for example, or someone else aboard the Normandy might comment on a conversation you just had with him or her. None of this information has any impact on the game, but it deepens your feeling of character and can occasionally be good for a chuckle. (I particularly enjoyed reading James complain about the sting of the ink from a tattoo I watched him get on Citadel.)

That?s about the extent of Mass Effect 3 Datapad. It?s solidly implemented, and like Mass Effect 3 itself, looks terrific, even if it just doesn?t give you very many things to actually do. If you want more action from your app, but still want to boost your Galactic Readiness Rating, Mass Effect Infiltrator is a full-out game that will give it to you?but it costs $6.99. You can improve your Galaxy at War standing by playing Mass Effect 3?s in-game multiplier mode, too, but that?s a commitment of time (and probably annoyance) that won?t suit everyone. Provided you?ve turned over money to Apple for a compatible device, Mass Effect 3 Datapad is the cheapest and easiest way to speed up your game.

James Cameron describes deepest spot in ocean as 'barren' (+video)

Filmmaker James Cameron became the first person to make a solo dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the ocean, in a custom-built submersible.?

James Cameron has returned from the abyss.?

Skip to next paragraph National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron completed a record-breaking dive to the lowest point of the Mariana Trench. See scenes as Cameron's sub, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, resurfaced, and Cameron emerged from the pilot's capsule around noon, local time (10 p.m. ET March 25th).

The director of "Titanic" and "Avatar" successfully completed the 6.8-mile dive to the Challenger Deep, thought to be the lowest point on Earth, and has returned to the surface. The filmmaker's verdict on the spot, which has been visited by humans only once before:?"I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren, desolate lunar plain, appreciating," Cameron told the Associated Press.

In other words, he didn't see much, save for a few inch-long amphipods, shrimplike bottom feeders, scuttling across the soft ocean floor. Due to a hyraulic failure on his submarine's sample collector, Cameron was also unable to bring back much in the way of souvenirs.?

Cameron is just the third person in history to visit Challenger Deep, which lies in the 1,500-mile-long Mariana Trench in the North Pacific. The other two adventurers, US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard, took their dive together in 1960. But they didn't see much, as their landing stirred up so much sediment that it obscured their vision. After just 20 minutes on the bottom, the two explorers returned to the surface empty-handed.

Unlike the vehicle that transported Walsh and Piccard, Cameron made his trip in the Deepsea Challenger, a vessel that is much taller than it is wide. This unique, 24-foot-long ship took eight years to build in Australia. It's cost hasn't been disclosed.

The vessel is innovative in several ways. To protect against the potentially crushing pressure in the deep sea, the project's lead engineer, Ron Allum, designed a new foam flotation material Isofloat that will not crack, compress or lose buoyancy on the journey. This foam makes up 70 percent of the submersible's volume.

Other important components of the sub are its lights and cameras. Cameron captured hi-resolution 3D footage during his dive.?

Scientific feats such as trips to the bottom of the sea, are most commonly tackled by governments and scientific organizations. And other entrepreneurs like Richard Branson are also trying to get to the deepest part of the sea.

But Cameron has distinguished himself. Not only does he have access to the necessary fiscal resources, but his talent with a camera, curiosity and adventurous spirit set him apart.

?Imagination feeds exploration,? Cameron said, according to National Geographic, one of the trip's sponsors, before the journey. ?You have to imagine the possible before you can go and do it.?

Though he has the necessary skills for the job, Cameron's physical attributes provided some challenges: All six feet, two inches of Cameron were?crammed inside a metal sphere with a diameter at the surface of just 43 inches. During the dive,?Cameron reported that his sub shrank by three inches, due to the immense pressure. ?

"I can't say it's very comfortable," Cameron told the AP. "And you can't stretch out."

Pope in Cuba: Will he raise case of jailed American?

Many are watching to see if the pope mentions the case of imprisoned US aid worker, Alan Gross.? But the delicacy of the his trip to Cuba makes it unlikely, writes guest blogger Girish Gupta.

Washington will be watching Cuba carefully this week, as Pope Benedict XVI walks a diplomatic tightrope between his church, the government-proclaimed atheist Cuban state, and dissidents on the island. The Catholic Church has already described the US embargo as useless and Washington will be keen for attention to be deflected away from US policy on Cuba.
?
Diplomats will also be watching for any mention of Alan Gross, a subcontractor for the United States Agency for International Development arrested here in December 2009, accused of spying. His wife, Judy Gross, has called for the pope to help at least allow her husband to travel to the United States to visit his elderly mother, who is suffering from inoperable lung cancer.
?
Ultimately, she would like his release from prison, and return to the United States. "I have one hope left, and that?s, of course, the pope,? she told The Washington Post. ?If that doesn?t work, I think he?ll probably die in Cuban prison.?

The Cuban government accused Mr. Gross of attempting to "destroy the revolution through the use of communications systems out of the control of authorities," according to a Cuban court statement. He entered Cuba on a tourist visa and was caught with a satellite phone.? Gross said he was trying to help the country's Jewish community find better access to the internet.

Havana is keen to use Gross as a bargaining chip in return for the Cuban Five, whose faces adorn billboards here in Havana. They were arrested by US authorities in 1998 and convicted in 2001 for spying on anti-Castro exiles in Miami.

The pope has an incredibly difficult task ahead of him as he lands in Havana today from the eastern city of Santiago. ?He said last week during his visit to Mexico that the "Marxist ideology" in Cuba "no longer corresponds to reality." However, Benedict XVI has refused to meet with dissidents. It is unlikely he will want to mention Gross, or even allude to him, given the already delicate situation the pope faces in Cuba.

Later today, the pope will fly to Havana to meet President Raul Castro. There is much speculation as to whether older brother Fidel Castro will speak with the pope as well.? The former president was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, after the 1959 Revolution expelled priests and
nuns, seized church property, and banned religious believers from the Communist party. ?In 1976, Cuba declared itself an atheist state and only reinstated Christmas as a national holiday in preparation for Pope John Paul II's visit in 1998.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is also in Cuba this week for radiotherapy. He has invoked Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church throughout his presidency and will no doubt be eager for a photo opportunity with the pope.

? The views expressed are the author's own.

World News - Venice sinking five times faster than thought?

ROME -- Venice appears to have more nicknames than street names. It?s known as the "Queen of the Adriatic," the "City of Water," "City of Masks," "City of Bridges," "The Floating City," and "City of Canals."

But is Venice destined to become "The Divers' Paradise" much faster than we thought? New research by U.S. scientists suggests it is sinking more than?five times faster than experts in Venice believe.

Saying that?the city?is sinking is just about as obvious as saying that the wind?will always blow in Chicago. It?s just a thing of nature. And there?s nothing anybody can do to stop it.??

While Venetians and tourists know that Venice's appeal is due to its undeniable beauty, with its Gothic and Byzantine palazzos appearing to float on the canals and lagoon, much of the city's allure comes from the fact that it appears to be disappearing.

So you don?t need a scientist to tell you that Venice is sinking. In fact, sometimes they tell you otherwise. Back in the 1980s Venetians rejoiced at the news that the city had finally stabilized.? But, to use an Italian sailor?s jargon, that theory ?loses water from all sides.?

It?s quite obvious to the naked eye (or rather, to the naked ankle when it floods) that parts of Venice?are flooding more and more often. To tourists, walking in a flooded St. Mark?s Square might be a unique photo opportunity, but to Venetians it?s a?sign of things to come.?

History, architecture, art and much more - great Italian destinations!

So Venice is sinking. But the question remains -- how long will it take before it?turns from floating jewel to a playground for divers?

The answer comes from a new research by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, expected to?be published on Wednesday: Venice is still sinking, and sinking at a rate of up to two millimeters per year (0.08 inches).??

City heading out to sea
There?s more. Not only is the city being reclaimed by the waters that made it famous, it now looks like it?s actually heading out to sea, as if the glorious capital of the former Maritime Venetian Republic is tired of being a tourist attraction and wants to die in the Adriatic.

According to measurements taken over 10 years, Venice is also tilting a bit, about a millimeter or two eastward per year. While this doesn?t mean that you should buy a ticket right away in order to see Venice before it disappears, it raises concern that not enough is being done to save it.? ?

A complex system of moving dams around Venice that took decades and millions of dollars to build is nearing completion. The new research could well call into question whether these major works will actually be enough to save the ?Floating City.?

One?of the biggest experts on the state of Venice, Luigi Tosi,?of Italy's National Research Center, pointed out that Venice's "sinking" was actually a combination of land subsidence and sea level rise.

He said the Scripps researchers' results "tell us nothing new." "We have published a paper back in 1992 that arrived to the same conclusions," he said.

But experts at Consorzio Venezia Nuova, the group in charge of safeguarding Venice and the lagoon, told NBC News they had a lot of questions about the Scripps report, saying they thought the city was sinking much more slowly.

Italy?s Cinque Terre region readies for spring tourists

?I learned about the new research from journalists like yourself,? said an official who asked not to be named. ?We have records of the subsiding of Venice for hundreds of years, and yet they haven?t called us."

But one thing is clear to the official -- 10 years of measurements might sound a lot to most people, but on Venice?s standards it?s the blink of an eye.

"We have calculated that the city has been sinking three to four centimeters (about 1.5 inches)?per century," the official said.

That's not to say the people at Consorzio Venezia Nuova aren't paying attention, however.

"Now they say two millimeters per year?that means Venice would sink 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) every 100 years. That?s more than five times more than we calculated. So I?ll believe it when I see it," he said.?

It?s unclear whether the Scripps Institute team will contact the Consorzio before the research is published on Wednesday.? But one way or another their difference will have to be reconciled ? and it will be, once again, just water under the bridge.
