Cruise bookings fall after Concordia shipwreck

(AP) ? The frightful images of a sinking Italian cruise ship have scared off some cruise passengers, at least temporarily, during the industry's peak booking season.

Travel agents ? who book more than two-thirds of cruise passengers worldwide ? have been nervously watching bookings ever since the Costa Concordia, which is owned by Carnival Corp, ran aground on Jan. 13.

On Monday, they got a new reason to be nervous: bookings fell significantly for Miami-based Carnival Corp. following the Costa accident. Attention is now focused on Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which reports earnings on Thursday. An increase there could show that passengers are fleeing Carnival over safety fears. A decrease could indicate an overall distrust of all cruise lines.

Nearly 11 million Americans took a cruise last year, generating an estimated $14.5 billion in revenue for the industry, according to PhoCusWright, a travel research firm. Like the rest of the travel industry, cruise lines are still recovering from the Great Recession. Several new mega-ships started sailing just as passengers struggling with their finances decided to stay home. But 2012 was supposed to be a year of moderate growth.

Carnival won't say exactly how much bookings have dropped, but it disclosed Monday that in the 12 days following the Concordia capsizing there was a percent decline "in the mid-teens compared to the prior year." Reservations hit a low on Jan. 16, the company said in its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Carnival operates 101 ships under several brands including Costa, Carnival, Cunard, Holland America, Princess and Seabourn. It said reservations with the Costa line are "down significantly" but difficult to interpret because many Costa customers were rebooked on other ships because of the loss of the Concordia ship.

"Despite these recent trends, we believe the incident will not have a significant long-term impact on our business," the company said.

Carnival's statement is the first evidence that passengers are hesitant to embark on cruises after seeing the awful images of the Concordia shipwrecked off the Italian coast. More than 4,200 passengers and crew were on board the ship at the time of the accident. Seventeen bodies have been recovered, one of which has not yet been identified. Sixteen people are missing.

Europeans, who have been bombarded with daily reports of the accident, have been particularly skittish. They accounted for about 38 percent of Carnival's revenues last year.

Jaime Katz, an analyst at Morningstar, noted that there were big discounts on some seven-day cruises out of Rome while other trips had raised prices.

Discounts depend on which company is operating the ship and where it is traveling. Katz added that first time cruisers might also be more hesitant to book.

Unlike plane tickets or hotel rooms which are mostly booked directly through the internet, most cruises are sold by travel agents. Passengers like speaking with somebody who can assist them with all the decisions and quirks involving each ship and itinerary. That scattered sales approach makes it harder to gauge the impact of an accident like the Concordia.

"Who knows how many people ... (were) on the fence and decided not to book?" said Michael Driscoll, editor of Cruise Week.

Barclay's Capital noted that on Thursday, the Carnival line began offering promotional onboard credits of up to $200 for things like drinks and spa treatments.

"Despite this ad, which in normal circumstances would have stimulated strong call volume, calls remain down 10 (percent)," Barclay's analyst Felicia R. Hendrix wrote in a note to investors.

A major unnamed online travel agent has also seen cruise call volume fall 30 percent, Hendrix said.

Hendrix also noted that cancelations in the U.S. are up 10 to 15 percent. That's because savvy travelers are backing out of trips now in anticipation of getting the same cruise later for less.

In the week following the shipwreck, booking site CruiseCompete saw 4 percent fewer people requesting price quotes for a cruise than the same week last year. This past week saw requests down 3 percent. Right before the accident, inquiries were up 9 percent.

However, not everybody is seeing a drop in bookings.

Travel Leaders, a network of independently owned and operated travel agencies in the U.S. surveyed its members about demand for cruises this year. Spokeswoman Kathy Gerhardt said there has been no noticeable difference in responses gathered before and after the accident. And, Cruise Holidays, a network of 200 U.S. and Canadian travel agents specializing in cruises saw a 1.4 percent increase in sales last week compared with the same week in 2011.

And prices generally aren't falling.

Sharon Zackfia, an analyst with William Blair & Co., said the stable prices might indicate that "cruise companies are waiting to assess the situation in full before" offering deals.

"It's still way too soon after the Costa shipwreck," she said, "to know what the implications are going to for the cruise industry."

S Antrel Rolle, the Giants voice of discontent (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Antrel Rolle is the voice of discontent on the New York Giants .

If the veteran safety isn't happy with the way things are going, he doesn't hesitate to mouth off. It's put him at odds with coach Tom Coughlin at times.

It's also one of the reasons the Giants are back in the Super Bowl and facing the New England Patriots for the NFL title for the second time in four years.

Rolle's frustration after a 23-10 loss to the Washington Redskins on Dec. 18 might have been the spark the Giants (12-7) needed to turn their season around.

Rolle didn't rip anyone after the lackluster game, which left New York with a 7-7 record, but he did say injured players needed to stop babying themselves and, basically, get back to work.

"I can't stress what I felt at that particular point in time," Rolle said Monday. "I know I am not happy about what is being said and I know who I am as a person."

He spoke up and got his point across. It's not the first time. A year ago, he seemed to question the Giants' leadership on defense, taking a swipe at Justin Tuck.

Coughlin stepped in and asked Rolle to talk to him before taking his case to the media.

Rolle broke etiquette after the Washington game, but his words were appreciated.

"You don't want to be labeled as a guy who is a cancer in the locker room or a guy who is a big mouth," Rolle said, noting his mother has always chided him for saying too much. "I am like: `Mom, I hear you.' But I don't look at the beginning of the tunnel. I look at the end of the tunnel. I know what I am saying. I would never speak anything that is not meaningful and that I feel cannot help my teammates. It's never been about me."

Rolle insists he is a team player, doing whatever his coaches want without missing a practice.

"When you hear all the talk that he is a big mouth, he's this or that, it's tough. It's extremely tough knowing that you are not that person," Rolle said. "The way things come up, I can't blame people for saying that but I also understand why I am saying it and what's the reason behind it."

The Giants haven't said how they will employ Rolle on Sunday against Tom Brady and the Patriots. In the 24-20 win over New England on Nov. 6, New York used a lot of three-safety alignments to handle the Patriots' two right ends.

Rolle had the job of shadowing Wes Welker, who was held without a touchdown despite having a team-high 136 yards receiving.

"I am very pleased with his attitude, first of all, with his outlook, because he is a very bubbly, smiley guy and he has really fit very well with our other players," Coughlin said.

Rolle comes into this Super Bowl with a little unfinished business, He was a member of the Arizona Cardinals team that dropped a 27-23 decision to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl in 2009.

"I can tell you right now, there's not too many feelings that can feel worse than that," Rolle said. "To be so close and have a hard-fought game, I think that eased the pain a little bit as opposed to going there and just getting your butt whooped. But I definitely don't want to feel that again."

The Giants arrived in Indianapolis on Monday a confident team, one that believes it can knock off New England again.

"We had no doubt," guard Chris Snee said, referring back to that game. "You have to be a confident team when you get on the plane. You reach this game for a reason. It's not by chance. You have to be confident coming out here."

Asked about his owne confidence, Rolle said: "I mean, we wouldn't have boarded the plane if we didn't expect to win. I think that is the bottom line. We have come here for one thing and one thing only which is to win. We are expecting to win this game come Sunday."

The Patriots (15-3) feel the same way.

"Listen, this is the last game of the season. I'm pretty sure that the Giants want to win and we want to win, point blank," defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said. "You have two good football teams who don't want to walk away with an `L'. Both sides are going to have to play really good football and not give up anything cheap. Trust me, we're not the only ones that feel that we want to win this ballgame. They're sitting over there saying the same thing. This is the last game, and the biggest game of your career. This is what you play for."

New 'True Blood' trailer hints at royal return

"True Blood's" Russell Edgington could soon be ready to reclaim his throne.

By Ree Hines

"True Blood" fans still upset by the less-than-regal season-three sendoff of big bad Russell Edgington can take heart. A new trailer for the fifth season of the series hints that the former vampire king of Mississippi could soon rise again.

"In Bon Temps, nothing stays buried forever."

That's the sole message of the trailer, delivered one word at a time as the camera pans up through a deep pit of rubble.

Of course, a tease like that could mean almost anything for a drama filled with vamps and other creatures of the night, but given the fact that Edgington was last seen burned, chained in silver and being buried alive (well, undead) in cement -- courtesy of Bill Compton, Eric Northman and their unlikely accomplice Alcide Herveaux -- he's certainly due for a vengeful return.

After all, his last words were "You will regret this!"

Are you looking forward to the return of "True Blood" and the possible return of the king? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Occupy protest resurfaces in Oakland after lull (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? It started peacefully enough: A midday rally at City Hall and a march. But as the day wore on, Oakland was hit by the most turbulent protests in weeks as Occupy demonstrators clashed repeatedly with police, leaving more than 400 people arrested.

The demonstrations in downtown Oakland broke a lull that had seen just a smattering of people taking to Oakland's streets in recent weeks for occasional marches that bore little resemblance to the headline-grabbing Occupy demonstrations of last fall.

That all changed Saturday with clashes punctuated by rock and bottle throwing by protesters and volleys of tear gas from police, and a City Hall break-in that left glass cases smashed, graffiti spray-painted on walls and an American flag burned.

AP photos showing the flag burning ? including images of masked protesters touching off the blaze, a woman urging protesters not to burn it, and another of an officer stomping out the fire ? drew attention on social networking sites.

At least three officers and one protester were injured. Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Thomason said there were more than 400 arrests on charges ranging from failure to disperse to vandalism,

On Sunday, Oakland officials vowed to be ready if Occupy protesters try to mount another large-scale demonstration. Protesters, meanwhile, decried Saturday's police tactics as illegal and threatened to sue.

Mayor Jean Quan personally inspected damage caused by dozens of people who broke into City Hall, which reopened Monday. She said she wants a court order to keep Occupy protesters who have been arrested several times out of Oakland, which has been hit repeatedly by demonstrations that have cost the financially troubled city about $5 million.

Quan also called on the loosely organized movement to "stop using Oakland as its playground."

"People in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior," she said.

Saturday's protests ? the most convulsive since Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment in November ? came just days after the announcement of a new round of actions. The group said it planned to use a vacant building as a social center and political hub and threatened to try to shut down the Port of Oakland for a third time, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

After the mass arrests, the Occupy Oakland Media Committee criticized the police's conduct, saying that most of the arrests were made illegally because police failed to allow protesters to disperse. It threatened legal action.

"Contrary to their own policy, the OPD gave no option of leaving or instruction on how to depart. These arrests are completely illegal, and this will probably result in another class action lawsuit against the OPD," a release from the group said.

Deputy Police Chief Jeff Israel told reporters late Saturday that protesters gathered unlawfully and police gave them multiple verbal warnings to disband.

Earlier this month, a court-appointed monitor submitted a report to a federal judge that included "serious concerns" about the department's handling of the Occupy protests. Police officials say they were in "close contact" with the federal monitor during the protests.

The national Occupy Wall Street movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, began in New York City in the fall but has been largely dormant lately. Oakland, New York and Los Angeles were among the cities with the largest and most vocal Occupy protests early on. The demonstrations ebbed after those cities used force to move out hundreds of demonstrators who had set up tent cities.

Caitlin Manning, an Occupy Oakland member, believes that Saturday's protest caught the world's attention.

"The Occupy movement is back on the map," Manning said Sunday. "We think those who have been involved in movements elsewhere should be heartened."

In Oakland, social activism and civic unrest have long marked this rough-edged city of nearly 400,000 across the bay from San Francisco. Beset by poverty, crime and a decades-long tense relationship between the police and the community, its streets have seen clashes between officers and protesters, including anti-draft protests in the 1960s that spilled into town from neighboring Berkeley.

Dozens of officers, who maintained guard at City Hall overnight, were also on the scene Sunday.

"They were never able to occupy a building outside of City Hall," Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said Sunday. "We suspect they will try to go to the convention center again. They will not get in."

Jordan defended his officers' response to the protesters on Saturday.

"No we have not changed our tactics," Jordan said. "The demonstrators have changed their tactics, which forces us to respond differently."

Quan, who faces two mayoral recall attempts, has been criticized for past police tear-gassing, though she said she was not aware of the plans. On Saturday, she thought the police response was measured.

She also said she hopes prosecutors will seek a stay-away order against protesters who have been arrested multiple times.

"It appears that most of them constantly come from outside of Oakland," Quan said. "I think a lot of the young people who come to these demonstrations think they're being revolutionary when they're really hurting the people they claim that they are representing."

Saturday's events began when a group assembled outside City Hall and marched through the streets, disrupting traffic as they threatened to take over a vacant convention center.

The protesters then walked to the convention center, where some started tearing down perimeter fencing and "destroying construction equipment" shortly before 3 p.m., police said. The number of demonstrators swelled as the day wore on, with afternoon estimates ranging up to 2,000 people, although city leaders say that figure was much closer to several hundred.

A majority of the arrests came after police took scores of protesters into custody as they marched through downtown, with some entering a YMCA building, Thomason said.

One of those taken into custody at the facility was KGO radio reporter Kristin Hanes.

Though she was released after about 25 minutes, Hanes said she was "angry that they put a reporter in zip-tie handcuffs."

Oakland police didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about her arrest.

Ari Solomon: Does Eating Meat Make You a Bully?

Here is the definition of the word bully: "A person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker." Many of us know firsthand what it's like to be bullied. We know what it's like to be vulnerable and scared, and to have that be taken advantage of. I never considered animals to be a part of that equation.

Then, a few years ago, a random discussion on a talk show led me to research factory farming, a practice that produces 99 percent of the animals we consume in the U.S. I not only read about the horrors of these places, but, thanks to countless undercover investigation videos posted online, I saw them. I saw baby calves being screamed at and punched in the face by desensitized farm workers. I saw turkeys being kicked and thrown against walls until their wings broke. A saw a baby pig having its head bashed in with a brick. These poor animals were being abused, tormented, and killed by merciless beings many times their size. They were being bullied.

Even though I was never in situations this extreme growing up gay, many LGBT people are. They are regularly verbally abused, physically assaulted, and even killed. And while there undoubtedly is a difference between people and animals, the question must be asked: when it comes to things such as fear, pain, and suffering, aren't animals much more like us than they are not like us?

I know we all love a good burger or turkey sandwich, but isn't our consumption of these foods perpetuating the power-hungry and cruel attitudes we so strongly oppose? Is it really such a stretch to ask that all those who feel be liberated from the suffering caused by bullying? Because whether you want to admit it or not, that's precisely what it is. This realization, subconscious at the time, led me to become a vegan. By choosing to avoid animal foods, I feel I'm sending a strong message that I won't be a party to bullying in any form.

I know it's difficult to imagine giving up some of your favorite foods (you'll discover new ones, trust me) but I invite you to learn the truth about where those foods come from. Really think about it. Sit with it. Be honest with yourself. Does knowing that you pay other people to treat animals this way feel good in your soul?

A brilliant writer, Laura Moretti, once said this about animals:

Animals are the most victimized living creatures on earth; more than children, more than women, more than people of color. Our prejudice enables us to exploit and use them, as scientific tools and expendable commodities, and to eat them. We do to them any atrocity our creative minds can summon. We justify our cruelties; we have to or we can't commit them.

Chew on that.

UN nuclear inspection gets under way in Iran (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's foreign minister expressed optimism Sunday that a visit by U.N. inspectors to Iran's nuclear facilities would produce an understanding, despite world concerns that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons.

The three-day inspection tour by the International Atomic Energy Agency team comes during spiking tension. The West is imposing new sanctions to try to force Iran to slow or halt its nuclear program, and Iran is threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil passage, in retaliation.

Visiting Ethiopia, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi appeared to be trying to defuse the crisis.

"We are very optimistic about the mission and the outcome" of the IAEA mission, Salehi was quoted as saying by Iran's semiofficial Mehr news agency.

"We've always tried to put transparency as a principle in our cooperation with IAEA," Salehi said. "During this visit, the delegation has questions and the necessary answers will be given,"

The findings from the visit could greatly influence the direction and urgency of U.S.-led efforts to rein in Iran's ability to enrich uranium ? which Washington and allies fear could eventually produce weapons-grade material. Iran has declined to abandon its enrichment labs, but claims it seeks to fuel reactors only for energy and medical research.

The team is likely to visit an underground enrichment site near the holy city of Qom, 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Tehran, which is carved into a mountain as protection from possible airstrikes. Earlier this month, Iran said it had begun enrichment work at the site, which is far smaller than the country's main uranium labs but is reported to have more advanced equipment.

The U.N. nuclear agency delegation includes two senior weapons experts ? Jacques Baute of France and Neville Whiting of South Africa ? suggesting that Iran may be prepared to address some issues related to the allegations that it seeks nuclear warheads.

In unusually blunt comments ahead of his arrival, the IAEA's Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts ? who is in charge of the agency's Iran file ? said he wants Tehran to "engage us on all concerns."

Iran has refused to discuss the alleged weapons experiments for three years, saying they are based on "fabricated documents" provided by a "few arrogant countries" ? a phrase authorities in Iran often use to refer to the United States and its allies.

"So we're looking forward to the start of a dialogue," Nackaerts told reporters at Vienna airport. "A dialogue that is overdue since very long."

In a sign of the tensions that surround Iran's disputed nuclear program, a dozen Iranian hard-liners carrying photos of slain nuclear expert Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan were waiting at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport early Sunday.

Iranian state media allege that Roshan, a chemistry expert and director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, was interviewed by IAEA inspectors before being killed earlier this month in a bomb attack that Iran claims is part of an Israeli-led covert campaign of sabotage and slayings. Roshan was at least the fourth member of Iran's scientific community to be assassinated.

In Vienna, the IAEA said it did not know Roshan and never talked to him.

The IAEA team wants to talk to key Iranian scientists suspected of working on a weapons program. They also plan to inspect documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.

It's unclear how much assistance Iran will provide, but even a decision to enter a discussion over the allegations would be a major departure from Iran's frequent simple refusal to talk about them.

Iran also has accused the IAEA in the past of security leaks that expose its scientists and their families to the threat of assassination by the U.S. and Israel.

The visit was set to coincide with a vote in Iran's parliament on a bill that would require the government to immediately cut the flow of crude oil to Europe in retaliation for sanctions. Lawmakers postponed the vote Sunday to further study the bill, and no date for a vote has been set.

The draft bill is Iran's response to an EU decision last week to impose an embargo on Iranian oil. The measure is set to take full effect in July.

The head of Iran's state oil company said Sunday that pressures on Iran's oil exports ? the second biggest in OPEC ? could drive prices as high as $150 a barrel.

"It seems we will witness prices from $120 to $150 in the future," Ahmad Qalehbani was quoted by the official Islamic Republic News Agency. He did not give a timeframe for the prediction, nor any other details.

The price of benchmark U.S. crude on Friday was around $99.56 per barrel. About 80 percent of Iran's foreign revenue comes from exporting around 2.2 million barrels of oil per day.

Oil prices have been driven higher in recent weeks by Iran's warnings that it could block the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf, the route for about one-fifth of the world's oil. Last week, the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, joined by French and British warships, entered the Gulf in a show of strength against any attempts to disrupt oil tanker traffic.

Exxon selling Japan unit for $3.9B to cut refining (AP)

TOKYO ? Exxon Mobil Corp. is selling its Japanese refining and marketing business to partner TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. in a $3.9 billion deal that reflects a long-term decline in Japan's demand for fuel and a global strategy to refocus on exploration.

TonenGeneral Sekiyu will buy 99 percent of the shares of Exxon Mobil Yugen Kaisha, which refines and sells fuel and lubricants, the Japanese refiner said about the deal, announced Sunday. Exxon Mobil's stake in TonenGeneral will drop to 22 percent from 50 percent.

Large oil and gas companies have been shedding refining operations in recent years and turning to oil exploration and production in the hope of bigger profits. Tighter rules for car and truck fuel efficiency are expected to weigh on growth in demand for fuel in developed countries for years to come.

Sherman Glass, president of ExxonMobil Refining, told a press conference Monday in Tokyo that it was a restructuring move amid a changing global energy market, but said the company remained "very committed" to its refining ? or downstream ? operations.

"What we continue to do is try to restructure ? in some cases invest, in some cases divest and in some cases restructure ? to make it a strong group of operations in our downstream" business, Glass told reporters.

Exxon has a "long-term strategy of moving away from refining, where the margins are wafer thin, and into exploration," said Nicholas Smith, a strategist at CLSA in Tokyo. "Refining is something that anybody can do. You can buy the tech off the shelf."

TonenGeneral said the move would give it more flexibility and competitive in a challenging environment.

"The Japanese market is getting tougher," said Jun Mutoh, the company's managing director. "The decision-making within the company will be more effective in the newly integrated production-distribution operation."

TonenGeneral will continue to deliver products and services under the Esso, Mobil and General brands and continue to rely on Exxon Mobil's technology and technological support in the refining and petrochemicals businesses.

Other major oil companies are making similar moves.

Marathon Oil spun off its refining operations last July. This summer ConocoPhillips also plans to split itself in two, separating its refining operations from its more profitable oil and gas exploration and production business. BP and Shell are selling refineries in the U.S. and Western Europe.

Exploring and producing oil and gas offers investors a chance for faster growth. Also, oil prices are high and are expected to remain so, which has helped producer profits and funded a boom in new exploration.

Late night poll: Do you hack your Android phone?

Android Central

Hacking is half (or more) the fun for many an Android user.  With the right phone, you can change just about everything, making it have little resemblance to the way it came out of the box.  It's fun and addicting for the same reason computer tweaking and hacking is -- we do it because we can.  There's a good chance many of you guys reading this are the same way.  The simple fact that you found an Android site on the Internet makes you a more informed user, and you're exposed to all this hacking jazz.

There's as good a chance that you're not into breaking hacking your phone.  We get that.  You like things well enough the way they are, and just use your phone.  We wanna hear from both sides this evening, so let us know in the poll.

DoCoMo to ask for changes in Android -Nikkei (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? NTT DoCoMo Inc (9437.T) will ask Google Inc (GOOG.O) to modify its Android operating system so that smartphones using it would put less pressure on networks, a move that could spark wider protests against the leading mobile software platform, the Nikkei reported.

The leading Japanese mobile phone service provider identified an Android application, which enables free-of-charge voice communication, as a major cause behind a service disruption that occurred on Wednesday, the business daily said.

Some Android applications send out control signals once every three to five minutes even when not in use. This translates to ten times that of a conventional mobile phone, placing additional strain on the network, the newspaper said.

A sharp rise in data consumption puts more pressure on wireless operators to speed up capacity investments, as they are struggling with clogged telecom networks to keep up with growing demand for data services on the go.

DoCoMo intends to request that Google make Android transmit control signals less often, since frequent service disruptions could hurt the popularity of Android phones, the Nikkei reported.

"Other operators have complained, some publicly, about the pressure Android apps in particular are putting on their networks," said John Jackson, analyst at British wireless consultancy CCS Insight.

The Japanese paper said that DoCoMo also hopes to team up with other mobile service providers, along with Google, to ask Android application developers to limit the frequency of control signals.

"I expect that at the very least operators worldwide will watch this dispute closely to see what remedy might be in the offing," Jackson said.

Other operators may use the dispute as an occasion to demand similar modifications, he said.

"Either way, DoCoMo's move comes at a challenging time for Google with the Android ecosystem failing to generate Apple-like (AAPL.O) revenue and OEM licensees coming under legal pressure from Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) in particular," he added

Dems bash, bank secret cash (Politico)

Democrats have seized on a new attack line: Republicans as the party of unlimited secret money.

The only problem: so are the Democrats.

In recent days, Obama released an ad blasting ?secretive oil billionaires? for attacks on him, Nancy Pelosi unveiled a campaign slogan, calling for ?a new politics free of special interest influence,? and the Democratic National Committee released a Web ad accusing Mitt Romney of lying about his ties to a super PAC that?s spent millions supporting him.

Maybe that would have sounded better in 2008, when Obama put the kibosh on the Democratic outside money infrastructure ? or even in 2010, when Obama led a chorus of Democrats assailing Republicans? outside spending.

But this year, Democrats are playing the same game. Obama?s team has blessed a network of super PACs trying to raise the same seven-figure checks as Romney?s. And Obama?s allies have gone even further than Romney?s, setting up nonprofit groups that do not disclose their donors at all.

In fact, top Democrats are so adament about the need to raise unlimited ? and sometimes secret ? cash this year that some operatives aren?t pleased about the recent attacks. It?s a whole lot tougher to get wealthy liberals to fork over mega-checks when the politicians who?d benefit are ripping Republicans for taking the same types of contributions.

Then there are doubts about the effectiveness of such attacks, considering how they went the last time Democrats tried them in 2010. Obama and his allies spent the final weeks before Election Day complaining bitterly about GOP-allied spending groups, hinting they could be awash in illegal foreign money, only to watch Republicans notch historic gains in the House.

And, beyond that, the Obama campaign?s juggernaut fundraising makes the president an especially poor messenger for the attacks, reasoned one Democratic operative familiar with the party?s outside money operation.

?When you?ve been talking about raising $1 billion, you really shouldn?t be talking about money in the political process,? the operative said. Democrats ?should talk about issues that people really care about like whether their taxes are going to get raised, whether their kid is going to get sent to Afghanistan, or whether they?re going to get blown up on a plane,? the operative said, adding ?campaign finance isn?t a particularly resonate issue other than for those who are talking about it.?

But party leaders suggest the secret money attacks forecast in Obama?s ad ? his first of the cycle ? are part of a broader messaging strategy that seeks to cast Republicans as secretive and unethical pawns of big business who couldn?t care less about the plight of regular Americans.

?The reason that it was something we led with was that it?s part of the contrast,? said DNC Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz when asked about why Obama?s ad began with a secret money attack rather than the gauzy positive themes that typically define inaugural ads.

The theme seems geared partly toward a potential general election that pits Obama against Romney ? the GOP presidential candidate Democrats would least like to face. The former Massachusetts governor has come under heavy Democratic fire in recent days for his reluctance to detail his work at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital and his refusal to release his campaign bundlers or multiple years of tax returns ? disclosures that Obama has made.

And, without prompting, Wasserman Schultz, a Florida congresswoman, pointed to Romney to explain the theme behind Obama?s ad. ?It?s a pattern. Just look at Mitt Romney. He isn?t being frank and honest about his role in Bain Capital. He accepts hundreds of millions of dollars in shadowy special interest money that he talks out of both sides of his face about,? the Florida congresswoman told POLITICO, referring to Romney?s struggles to define his relationship with the deep-pocketed super PAC, Restore Our Future, which has buoyed his campaign with sharp ads savaging his opponents.

Clemson women lose 15th straight to No. 5 Duke (AP)

CLEMSON, S.C. ? Clemson coach Itoro Coleman doesn't expect to endure many more blowouts from No. 5 Duke.

In two seasons, the former Tiger standout guard has watched her program lose 92-37 and, on Friday night, 81-37. She swears better days are coming for Clemson women's basketball.

"We're not going to be this Clemson team forever," Coleman said. "I mean we have a lot of young kids on this team. We're in a unique situation where they're getting experience I don't think most kids around the world get."

The Tigers (5-13, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) still have plenty to learn apparently after getting pounded by Duke (17-2, 8-0).

Clemson, trailing 25-22 with a little over five minutes left in the first half, were outscored 56-15 the rest of way. The Tigers couldn't score and couldn't stop the Blue Devils from scoring on the way to a 15th straight defeat in the series ? all but one of Duke's wins coming by fewer than 10 points.

Coleman remembers when she was a freshman for stellar coach Jim Davis on a Clemson team that was a regular contender for ACC titles. She gained her experience in practice against other, older standouts for the Tigers. Coleman's teams won five times against Duke during her four years. The Tigers have won only once since Coleman, then Itoro Umoh, left.

Her players ? Coleman starts three freshmen in Nikki Dixon, Chelsea Lindsay and Kelly Gramlich who each played 30 or more minutes ? don't have the luxury of watching and waiting. "They're kind of learning on job and that's just the reality of our team," she said. "We've got to continue to grow."

There are signs of improvement. Earlier this month, Clemson defeated North Carolina 52-47 to break a nine-year, 53-game streak of losses to top 25 opponents.

Tricia Liston scored 16 points and Elizabeth Williams 14 to lead Duke.

The Blue Devils will put their 34-game home winning streak on the line Monday when they host No. 3 Connecticut. The Huskies were the last team to beat Duke at home two seasons ago.

Duke made sure most shots by the Tigers didn't go in. Clemson finished 14 of 51 from the floor for 27.5 percent shooting, its second poorest performance this season. The Blue Devils had 12 steals and nine blocks, five of them by Williams.

Clemson didn't have a field goal over the last 13 minutes and didn't have a point in the final eight as Duke won its 15th straight over the Tigers (5-13, 1-6) and 11th straight this season.

"When they work really, really hard to get certain things done, then you feel pretty good about what you're doing out there," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "I think that was exactly the case tonight."

Duke used a 15-2 run the last five minutes of the opening half to gain control and continued the surge after the break. It was the eighth straight game they've defeated Clemson by 24 points or more.

Williams, the 6-foot-3 freshman, said the Blue Devils' surge got the team going and possibly shook Clemson out of rhythm. "That's when we started playing our game," she said.

Quinyotta Pettaway had 12 points to lead the Tigers, who scored just 13 points in the second half.

Richa Jackson finished with 13 points and Haley Peters 12 for Duke, which finished 34 of 65 shooting from the field (52.7 percent) ? the third straight game it shot 50 percent or better.

The Tigers succumbed to Duke's defense in the second half. They didn't hit a field goal in the final 13:09 of the game and didn't have a point the last 7:51.

Duke came in the only undefeated team in ACC play this season. Clemson, though, did what it could to make Littlejohn as crazy Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Tigers called it "Pack The House" night, offering $1 tickets and giving away bobble-head dolls of second-year coach Itoro Coleman, who won five games against Duke when she was a star guard for the Tigers from 1996-1999.

Duke's only lost once to Clemson in the 13 seasons since.

Clemson's pep band and students wore red and yellow flashing glasses. Yet, as you might expect from a program that won its 300th game all-time in the ACC over No. 8 Maryland, the Blue Devils weren't fazed by any of it.

Duke, which had made more than 55 percent of its shots the previous two games, kept up the hot shooting against Clemson in the opening half. The Blue Devils finished the period 18 of 32 from floor (56.2 percent) and made seven of their final nine shots as they closed the half on 15-2 run and continually beat the Tigers back on defense for several easy layups.

Williams led the way for Duke on offense and defense. She made 5 of 7 shots for 11 points and added five blocks in the opening half, surpassing her average of 4.7 blocks per game during ACC play.

How Fastenal Is Vending a Success Story (The Motley Fool)

Industrial and construction materials supplier Fastenal (Nasdaq: FAST - News) has significantly upped its market presence lately with the expansion of its industrial vending machines -- dubbed a "one-stop shop" to replenish supplies.

Although a two-year-old concept, the whole idea seems to have significantly picked up speed over the past ten months, as these machines doubled their contribution to Fastenal's fiscal 2011 sales to 16% as compared to year before.

A really good idea
Why would you go to a store and stand in the queue just to buy nuts and bolts or cutting tools when you could have a mini-shop in your very own workplace? That's exactly the question Fastenal's been trying to raise through its vending machine concept.

These machines, which stock items ranging from metal cutters and grinding disks to first-aid kits and gloves, are becoming popular with diverse industrial customers including manufacturing plants, energy providers, and construction contractors.

Customers seem to have taken a liking to this idea as it saves time and money, making inventory replenishment much more convenient. Automatic billing saves administrative and processing time too, while inventory levels are monitored by Internet-based software, which alerts Fastenal when supplies reach a certain low level. The restocking is done through a local store.

By the end of 2011, a total of 7,500 machines had been installed at customer locations, up from 1,925 machines just a year earlier. In fact, Fastenal's base of installed machines increased by an impressive 32% in the recent fourth quarter as compared to the third.

A smart way to save costs
The vending machines are fast reducing Fastenal's need to open new stores to drive sales, thus saving on costs. In the recent past, the company has been increasing its store count by 14% each year. However, thanks to the vending machine expansions, the company need to add just 5% more, 122 new stores, in 2011. It is almost like Fastenal is opening small stores in client locations themselves.

As a matter of fact, analyst Ryan Merkel from William Blair & Co. believes the introduction of these vending machines could be the largest "land-grab opportunity" in distribution of industrial supplies in the past 20 years. The implementation of this strategy is certainly helping to keep Fastenal one step ahead of industry competitors such as W.W. Grainger (NYSE: GWW - News), which posted revenue growth of only 3.8% over the past three years.

Fastenal's fast figures
The company plans to install 10,000 vending machines each year over the next few years, and it definitely seems capable of doing so. This debt-free company has an impressive unlevered free cash flow of $138 million in addition to their encouraging recent performance.

In every quarter of 2011, Fastenal saw over 20% revenue growth. The company's earnings per share also met Street expectations all throughout the year. And in the latest quarter, Fastenal's profits increased by 34%, to $87.5 million, compared to last year.

Future proof
Fastenal's management plans to promote these machines aggressively in the future using selling incentives and new software, which could be more cost effective for end users. Overall, I'm feeling good about Fastenal's future.

Open source controller framework lets you add the finishing touch

There are plenty of off-the-shelf controllers out there, but what if you fancy something a little more... you? How about fully customized, with a good seasoning of affordability and style? Design student Alex S has built a framework to help you build just that. The units shown above are for DJ-based programs, but you can create interfaces for any software that takes HID or MIDI input, and as they're modular, create endless ultra-custom set-ups. Keen to dismantle any technical barriers, Alex created a step-by-step Instructable, but you'll still need to get your hands dirty with Arduino and some circuitry. The whole project is open source, and while it's a step up from Lego, until we can just print these things, it seems like a great option to us.

Demi Moore Replaced By Mary-Louise Parker In 'Lovelace'

In other Demi news, Madonna reportedly reaches out to actress after her hospitalization.

Demi Moore

Amid her personal woes, Demi Moore, who had been set to play Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic, has been replaced by "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker.

Sources confirm to UsMagazine.com that the TV star will fill in for Moore, who had to drop out of the film earlier this week after she was hospitalized for "exhaustion." On Thursday, there was speculation that Chloë Sevigny would play the feminist icon when she was cast as a feminist journalist, but now it seems that those are two different roles.

"Lovelace" is currently shooting in Los Angeles with Amanda Seyfried playing the film's central character, '70s porn actress Linda Lovelace.

As the Demi drama rolls on, there are reports that Madonna reached out to the actress shortly after she was hospitalized. Moore has since been released from the L.A.-area hospital.

Sources tells E! News that the singer called her actress pal. "Madonna told Demi she was there if she needs anything," the E! source says, adding, "They're pretty tight."

The ladies last hung out during Golden Globes weekend, and they reportedly were going to see one another again over Super Bowl weekend; Madge is slated to perform during the halftime show. The status of their annual post-Oscars bash is currently up in the air.

While speculation runs rampant about why Moore was hospitalized, sources say that her ex, Ashton Kutcher, is "deeply concerned" for her. Moore is rumored to have been doing nitrous oxide before landing in the hospital. "He still cares about her and wants the best for her," the source added. "But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives."

Jimmy Kimmel & Melissa McCarthy Help Ellen DeGeneres Celebrate Her Birthday

With Jimmy Kimmel serving as co-host to help celebrate Ellen DeGeneres’ 54th birthday (the episode airs today), I can only imagine what will take place during the extravaganza. No doubt some hilarity ensues. The two welcomed “Bridesmaids” and “Mike and Molly” star Melissa McCarthy to the show, who talked about attending her first Golden Globes last week. We’ve got a clip for you to all enjoy as well, which can be seen below. As you can see by the above pic, Jimmy lets it be known that he’d like to appear in the “Bridesmaids” sequel if there is one. The color suits him, don’t you think? Heh heh. Melissa attended her first Golden Globes Awards with her hubby Ben Falcone last week and she dished with Ellen about being in awe while in the presence of Brangelina. Ellen: So you and Ben are talking to Brad and Angelina. Melissa: So I?m already in some weird altered state talking to Brad and Angelina. They?re so nice and chatty and really bubbly. Finally, I got a little weird and I was like you have to stop for a minute because it?s a lot visually to take in. Ellen: You said that to [...]

Women Can Take Steps to Prevent Cervical Cancer (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Women need to get recommended Pap tests, while girls and young women should be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) to protect them from cervical cancer, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises during Cervical Health Awareness Month.

Cervical cancer kills more than 4,000 women in the United States each year. Many of them could have been saved by routine Pap tests, which look for abnormal cells in the cervix that can turn into cancer. When caught early, those abnormal cells are highly treatable, according to the college.

More than 12,000 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

The good news is that the rate of cervical cancer in the United States has fallen more than 50 percent in the past three decades due to the widespread use of the Pap test, the college says.

Cervical cancer is caused by certain strains of HPV, a common sexually transmitted disease. HPV can also cause genital and anal warts and cancer of the mouth, head and neck, penis and anus.

Women can help protect themselves against cervical cancer by being monogamous, practicing safe sex and getting periodic Pap tests. In addition, girls and young women aged 9 to 26 should receive the HPV vaccine, the college recommends.

A young women should get her first Pap test when she turns 21 and continue having a Pap test every two years until age 30. Women age 30 and beyond who have three consecutive negative Pap test results can be screened once every three years, the college says.

HTC's UK chief wants to ease off the new-product gas, focus on 'amazing hardware'

If you ever thought remembering HTC's titanic product line was like trying to recall the Greek alphabet, then it seems you're not alone. Phil Roberson, head of the firm's UK operations apparently thinks the display cabinet is getting a little crowded, too, telling Mobile Magazine "We have to get back to focusing on what made us great - amazing hardware." No surprises that there's been a tightening of focus after filing disappointing results just earlier this month. There's already been the odd whisper of new directions for HTC, and this year's phone roll-out is already under way, but with Roberson suggesting tablets aren't high on its list of priorities this year, we're banking on further details of 2012's product plans at next month's MWC.

Obama speech echoes in town with failed factory

(AP) ? After 19 years running state unemployment offices across northern Missouri, Steve Moore can rattle off the names of shuttered factories in this old railroad town with ease.

There's Matcor Automotive, a parts manufacturer that at its peak employed 300 workers but closed in June 2010 in response to declining production by General Motors. Textbook publisher Scholastic Inc. is closing its Moberly packaging center, costing the town another 100 jobs.

Then there's the biggest blow of all: the failed promises of Mamtek U.S. Inc., a Chinese-owned artificial sweetener factory backed by $7.6 million in state tax incentives and $39 million of local bonds that went belly up in 2011 when the company's bond payments dried up. More than 600 promised jobs went up in smoke, with the deal now facing scrutiny by Missouri lawmakers and a pair of investigations by the state's attorney general and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

"There was a lot of anticipation, and then a lot of disappointment," Moore said. "Let's be honest. Everybody had hoped that something was going to come out of it."

As President Barack Obama again pledged to repair the American economy in his annual State of the Union address Tuesday night, some Moberly residents chalked up his pronouncements as just more rosy rhetoric by a politician ? not unlike the July 2010 day when Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and former Gov. Bob Holden came to the town of nearly 14,000 and hailed the Mamtek project's potential.

Others blamed an intractable Congress for not working more closely with the president to lift the country's economy. Still more held out hope that manufacturing companies lured by the region's low cost-of-living and central location would once again seek out Moberly, a 136-year-old railroad hub that became known as the Magic City in the late 19th century for its seemingly overnight emergence on once-empty prairie.

"We got a promise that he didn't keep," said business owner Diane Harlan. "He promised our economy was going to be better, and it's not. In this small community, we were under the false hope that everything was going to be OK, and it's not."

Harlan spent seven years as executive director of Main Street Moberly, which represents downtown business owners, before opening the Darn It Yarn store seven months ago after the business group cut her full-time job to 20 hours a week. She voted for John McCain in 2008 but hasn't yet made up her mind about the 2012 election.

While vacant storefronts dot downtown Moberly, Harlan said her business has succeeded beyond expectations, allowing her to drop that part-time job starting next week. A handful of similar small businesses have sprouted nearby, from a sewing shop to a secondhand furniture store.

"People are finally figuring out, we can't depend on our leader to get us out of something that we've created," she said. "We've got to go back to the grassroots. More self-sufficiency, doing things on our own, teaching our children, instead of depending on a man sitting in a white castle to take care of us and make things right."

David Gaines, a vice president with the Moberly Area Economic Development Commission, is among the local officials who helped court Mamtek in a deal given the code name "Project Sugar" before it was publicly disclosed. Count him among those looking for more leadership from those in the audience at Tuesday night's speech.

"It's not so much what he says but what they do," Gaines said, referring to Congress. "They need to quit talking and do something.

"That's what is holding consumer confidence down, is the inability of Congress on both sides of the aisle to do what the people elected them to do," he added.

After the speech, Gaines said he was heartened to hear the president urge lawmakers to work together, not against one another.

"I do like the fact that he said it's time to stop the divisiveness between the two parties," Gaines said. "If they set the right tone, everyone will follow along. If they don't, the nation will just drift."

Political affiliation aside, Moberly residents interviewed Tuesday tended to agree that improving the economy and creating more local jobs are the most important issues facing their community and the country. Look no further than a commuter parking lot along U.S. 63 packed with cars while their owners work 35 miles south in the college town of Columbia. Moberly, in turn, attracts workers from dozens of surrounding rural towns.

"Folks are regularly commuting 40 or 50 or 60 miles to go to work every day," Gaines said. "When we share that with the folks we talk to in Atlanta and Chicago and LA, they are quite amazed that people are willing to commute that far for a good job. But they have to."

Elsewhere in Moberly, Obama's speech was met with disinterest, if not outright scorn. At Nelly's Someplace Else restaurant, dozens of Republicans filed past a pair of televisions showing the president's address as the monthly meeting of the Randolph Area Pachyderms Club. Few stopped to listen, though some jeered as they walked past.
