Career searches and job hunts are painful: answering ads, resum? tweaking, phone calls, interviews, preparation, sweat, tears, fear of rejection, etc.
But it?s funny, even after investing all of this effort, the same mistakes are often made by newbies and veterans alike.
In this series of articles, we?ll be talking about a variety of ways that you can enhance your job search and interviewing skills.
Today, I?ll be going over some common mistakes that job searchers make, including:
-? Relying too heavily on resum? submission alone

These are just a few of the fundamental gaffes good people make, and they make them alarmingly often. It?s like going 15 rounds with a heavy weight boxer and all you brought is a pillow. I mean, how bad do you want it?
Now I know, you can?t swing a dead cat without hitting a website, article or book dealing with the veritable cornucopia of job search advice, guidance, tips, techniques and opinions regarding what to do and of course, what NOT to do, pulling you in all directions. Navigating the confusing job search battleground is challenging enough, so, put the pillow down and pick up a battle axe!
Having gone through a 180 degree career change myself, maintaining relationships with skilled career coaches is the best investment I?ve made in a long time. I wouldn?t recommend it to everyone as it is expensive, but if I learned anything it was this:
YOUR career search is only as successful as YOU make it.
YOU are selling YOURSELF and just like products and services YOU consume, YOU must differentiate YOURSELF from YOUR competitors with features and, more importantly, benefits.
See a pattern here? Obvious and simple, isn?t it? At the end of the day, I learned how to better to prepare and arm myself with some non-intuitive tools that not only keep me in the fight, but help me win! Simple as that. So, what follows are some quick tips to help you, a frustrated job seeker, dodge, parry and thrust, becoming a better ?street fighter? when it comes to your current/future job search.? Let?s start sparring?
I?m sure you?ve found by now that the vast majority of available jobs are NEVER advertised. However, when responding to an ad, the first mistake people often make is blindly submitting their resum? or CV via email. Cover letters are always a nice touch, but unless there?s a $100 bill attached to it, chances are it will simply go unnoticed on the growing pile. Instead of a cover letter, try an ad response letter. By the way, I would send this by email AND regular mail.
Strategy:
-? Ads may signal urgency to fill a position
-? Target the HR manager, and even better, the Hiring manager ? or both!
-? Make sure you meet at least 80% of the qualifications listed
The ad response letter is a pseudo cover letter, but instead of using paragraphs of words to convey your expertise, structure it in such a way that highlights (rather than buries) your enticing qualifications. Start with an opening like ?I am replying to your recent posting for the position of VP of Document Distribution listed in? I have listed below my qualifications as they relate to the stated requirements of the position.? Then add a 2-column table (without borders). Label the first column ?VP of Document Distribution requirements? and the second, ?My Qualifications?. List the requirements and your respective qualifications. For example:
VP of Document Distribution requirements??????? My Qualifications
Degreed Professional????????????????????????????????????????????? Bachelor of Business Administration
Add that you?ve enclosed your resum?, sum up the match between the stated requirements and your qualifications, how it benefits the company and that you can deliver added value. Follow-up in 3-5 days. !BAM!
If you?re lucky enough to get a phone or face-to-face interview, a lot of folks drop the ball by not doing any sort of follow-up and when they do, they usually sound desperate. Most don?t even bother to write a simple ?thank you? note. C?mon people, you?re pillow fighting!
The focus piece begins with a simple ?thank you? note, very nicely formatted. Briefly thank them and recap the interview and what you like about the company. You should also focus on why YOU are the best candidate for the position. Finally, mention that you are very confident there is a match based on the ?Focus Piece? you?ve created ? on the back of the letter. On the back, create a 2-column table without borders as discussed in the Ad Response section and label accordingly. Match the requirements to your qualifications. In some cases you can cut and paste from your ad response letter.
Now, be careful, because during the interview, you may have noted additional requirements that weren?t in the ad. Be sure to listen for things like ?the most important things we?re looking for??. You want to add these to your Focus Piece. !POW!
Many people have great backgrounds, experience and skill sets, yet they struggle not only to convey their strengths, but also to translate their assets into benefits to a potential employer. You know that first interview question? ?So, tell me about your self??. Studies have shown this is where most people get ?knocked out?. Being able to articulate how your experience and background can benefit the employer is not easy. It takes preparation and practice. Being able to do so will not only boost your confidence, but also help you to better understand where you ?fit?.
So, on your resum?, how do you address an employer?s requirement? Unfortunately, most of us don?t do it adequately. We simply list the skills we feel will address that requirement. For instance, you might list ?cell culture? as a skill in response to the requirement, ?Must have experience in cell culture?. Okay, fair enough. So, you and about 200 other applicants have some sort of generic cell culture experience. Great, good for you ? NOT! First, how does this relate to the position? Second, what makes you potentially better than the other 200 applicants?? Instead you may want to highlight this skill as a particular achievement with a SAR:
Situation: Served as staff scientist in BSL II virology lab investigating cellular pathways for RNA virus infection from 2005 to 2011. Action: Studied and evaluated in vitro effects on multiple cell lines. Result: Determined BHK-21 cells are the most permissive lines for studying virus infection and published findings in Nature.
This is EXACTLY what you want to say in an interview! So, when you?re asked ?So, do you have cell culture experience?? isn?t it better to answer with the above SAR than with an ambiguous and less insightful ?yes?? Look at the difference in information content and quality. Have you ever been asked, ?can you tell me more about such and such?? This is your golden opportunity to toot your horn! Use one or two SARs and blow them away. Also, when you?re asked, ?So, tell me about yourself??, remember to relate your experience and skills to the stated requirements and line up a whole bunch of SARs. !BIFF!
This is not rocket science, and these approaches have been around and in use for a while. We just need to retrain ourselves in the way we go about our job searches. Will these or any techniques ensure job placement? No, of course not. But in case you haven?t noticed, it?s a dog-eat-dog world out there ? don?t get caught wearing Milkbone underwear.

Quantum Fuel Systems () said Tuesday it plans to cut operating costs and enhance its core automotive products as it seeks to grow shareholder value.
The Irvine, California-based Quantum develops and produces natural gas, fuel cell, propulsion systems and renewable energy generation systems in the United States and overseas.?
Quantum aims to expand and enhance its profile in the alternative fuel automotive sectors by investing in its manufacturing capacity for compressed natural gas and hydrogen storage systems.
The company also plans to direct more resources toward the marketing of advanced energy storage as well as hybrid-electric propulsion system products and technologies.
It also said on Tuesday it would make strategic assessment of its renewable energy projects outside of its core automotive tech focus and review opportunities for "accretive investments" the need minimal capital commitment.
Quantum expects operating costs to improve by $4.1 million a year, after implementing the cost-cutting measures.?
These measures include executive salary reductions, eliminating duplicate administrative expenses and streamlining its organizational structure.
It also plans to relocate its executive management and the corporate support personnel to Lake Forest, California, while subletting the long-term lease on the Irvine facility.
"These actions are in full alignment with the company's new leadership and board to focus resources on our automotive-based products and technologies and to reach profitability sooner as we drive growth of the business," Quantum's interim chief executive Brian Olson said in a statement.
"Today's announcement demonstrates our resolve to manage our cost structure in an effective manner going forward, with significant strides toward this end made already and additional opportunities going forward."
"It is imperative that we focus on our core business strengths, grow the business and reduce costs in a smart and efficient manner."
Last week, the alternative fuel company reported CEO Alan Niedzwiecki and chairman Dale Rasmussen resigned from their positions. Olson replaces Niedzwiecki on an interim basis.?
The board said it would promptly commence a search for a permanent CEO and chief financial officer.

The overall survey revealed the console industry should expect a nice revenue boost in the future, given that the surveyed expect to spend more money on console games than in 2011. JOPLIN, Mo (Reuters) - Having the president of the United States speak at commencement would normally be the most memorable day in the life of a high school senior.
But not in Joplin, Missouri, where President Barack Obama's commencement address on Monday will come one year after the deadliest tornado in the United States in six decades killed 161 people.
"I'm pretty sure we will remember the tornado more than Obama's speech," said graduating senior Ethan Ritschel.
Joplin is still recovering from the EF-5 tornado - the strongest rating possible - that claimed among its victims one graduating senior returning home from his commencement and six other public school students. It also destroyed 7,500 buildings, including Joplin High School.
Students who graduate Monday said they will do so with a mix of relief, sadness and gratitude. They went to classes their senior year in a shopping mall building that serves as the temporary school for 11th and 12th graders.
"It's bittersweet," said senior student Taylor Camden after high school seniors finished a commencement practice Friday. "It's going to be a sad, emotional day for a lot of people just to be at graduation. We all lost something, and everyone here lost their high school."
The high school, a two-story 1950s building, has been demolished and lays in rows of rubble behind a chain-link fence decorated with painted wooden stars that memorialize the school and victims.
A few blocks away, graduating senior Danielle Campbell sat on the front steps of her newly built house Friday with the just-released 2012 high school yearbook on her lap.
Her previous home was destroyed as her family and small dog huddled in a closet. Campbell's neighborhood is rebuilding, but vacant lots and treeless horizons are still reminders of the disaster.
Campbell said seeing the high school destroyed made her teary. "But I don't cry much anymore," she said. "You have to pick yourself up and keep going. I've become a stronger person."
The yearbook is titled "Back to the Drawing Board," a reference to starting over in what students call "Mall High School." Ground will be broken Tuesday on a new high school, middle school and two elementary schools to replace buildings destroyed by the tornado on May 22 of last year.
Allie Pederson, who dodged the tornado by getting into a large freezer with others at a convenience store, said attending school at the mall has been difficult.
"It gives you an ominous feeling; it's a reminder of the tornado every day," said Pederson, a junior.
But an outpouring of generosity and support has given students some unusual benefits, Campbell said.
GIFTS, OPPORTUNITIES
Every student got a MacBook laptop to use all year. The prom was sponsored in part by singer Katy Perry and included discounted dresses and tuxedos, free makeup for the girls and top entertainment and d?cor.
The football team got to play at the stadium of the NFL Kansas City Chiefs. A softball player, Campbell threw out a first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game.
"There were so many amazing opportunities we were able to get through school because of the tornado," Campbell said.
And of course Obama is speaking at commencement.
Ritschel said the perks were welcome but cannot fill the void for students who lost family, friends or their homes.
"It's not going to replace anything," he said.
More than 3,000 students lived in the path of the tornado, which was up to three-quarters of a mile wide and stayed on the ground for 13 miles. The storm forced 4,200 students to attend temporary schools.
The school district received extra counselors to help students cope with their fears and feelings, said Lisa Orem, director of special services. In all, 40 percent of students received help, with many of them complaining about fear of another tornado or losing parents, she said.
Some students said the trauma of the tornado changed them. Rachel Berryhill, who took shelter in a bathroom with her family when the tornado tore the roof off their house, said she no longer gets stressed over small things -- such as being "super neat" or wearing the best clothes.
"I'm more relaxed," she said. "Not having material things doesn't bother me."
Pederson said she values people closest to her more than she did before the tornado and she tries to reach out to them more often.
"I've become more caring, more attached to people," she said. "I'm trying to live my life in a better way."
At commencement, tribute will be paid to the two high school students killed in the tornado. Senior Will Norton died when the tornado pulled him through the sunroof of his car just as he was arriving home from graduation. Freshman Lantz Hare also died in a vehicle.
Commencement, normally held on a Sunday, was moved to Monday evening to accommodate Obama. A statement released by the White House said Joplin's "resilience and selflessness in the face of tragedy continues to inspire our nation."
The city has rebuilt at a rapid pace with the help of thousands of volunteers in cleanup, construction and other services. Building permits have been issued for two-thirds of the destroyed homes while 446 of 553 businesses have reopened.
On Tuesday, the anniversary of the tornado, the city has organized a "walk of unity" through the long path of the tornado. Many of the 428 students who graduate Monday are expected to take part.
Many students have grown tired of the attention the tornado has brought, Ritschel said.
"I'll feel relieved and I think most everyone will be relieved," he said. "It's time to move on with college or wherever life takes people."

We've heard that late Apple co-founder?Steve Jobs may have been?working until the day before his death, but now a report tell us just what he was focused on: A new iPhone design.
According to the folks at Bloomberg,?an individual with "knowledge of the plans" Apple has for the iPhone revealed that Jobs "worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October."
The same report offers?suggestions that the next generation of Apple's popular smartphone will have a larger screen than prior models.?Reuters has previously made the same claim, specifying that?the new device will "measure four inches from corner to corner," which would "represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area."
As the Verge's Vlad Savov points out, the combination of these reports suggests that "Apple's reconsideration of the iPhone's size wasn't a post-Jobs epiphany and that the company's longtime leader had himself seen the value in enlarging the handset to better compete in an evolving smartphone market."?
This is a bit surprising to those of us who remember how harshly the late Apple co-founder criticized larger smartphones in 2010, when he declared that "no one's going to buy" such devices. Then again, compared to some of the monsters out there now, a 4-inch screen may seem pretty tame.

From the Zoot Suit riots in Los Angeles to the garbage fires set by Young Lords in East Harlem, urban Latino youth have had to overcome predators in Blue. Some relief came with the wave of successful discrimination challenges that integrated the ranks of police with Blacks and Latinos. Law enforcement began to adopt community policing models as one of the few proactive elements to their repertoire, and by and large probable cause and its lite-counterpart, reasonable suspicion, ruled most encounters.
Now decades after the havoc created by Nixon's ill-fated but still perpetual War on Drugs our urban police are modeled under a Cheneyesque paradigm of prevention. It's called Zero Tolerance Policing (ZTP) and like the War on Drugs it operates under a racial construct. ZTP is never activated in the business class brothels of Manhattan because most of the Johns are white, nor is it deployed on Wall Street where cocaine trafficking is legendary. Similarly, the so-called War on Drugs is never a real war in America's malls even as the profile of a typical drug user in America is a white male.
Nor is ZTP played out in a black-white binary in urban America. No se?ores, Latinos are also disproportionately targeted by an overzealous, quota-driven police force in many of our cities.
New York City is the classic example; indeed, it is the ground zero of over-policing. In 2002 at the start of the Bloomberg administration about 97,000 persons were subject to the Stop & Frisk effort. That's now increased seven times with over 685,000 persons ensnared in 2011.
Latinos have definitely felt the impact. The first serious study of Stop & Frisk was by then Attorney General Elliot Spitzer whose groundbreaking 1999 report, analyzing over 175,000 incidents, confirmed what our Latino residents experienced day in and day out: even when you control for crime, Latinos were more likely than whites to be stopped. Even worse, stops of Blacks and Latinos were less likely to result in arrests than concomitant stops of Whites. None of these unsettling conclusions have eroded even with today's data.
In 2012, with Stop & Frisk continuing unabated, it seems like the more we complain the more Commissioner Ray Kelly and his occupying forces conduct Stop & Frisk. And Latinos are disproportionately found within its web. The most recent Stop & Frisk report by the NYCLU concludes that not only are Blacks and Latinos disproportionately subject to these practices but 90% of young Black and Latino men stopped were innocent.
The stakes are higher now as the positions have hardened for and against Stop & Frisk. Commissioner Kelly still walks on water in NYC - murders are down, so why stop Stop & Frisk? Outgoing Mayor Bloomberg - who admitted to inhaling marijuana and liking it - still presides over the marijuana arrest capital of the world in a State - get this - that decriminalized marijuana possession decades ago. That's over 50,000 low-level pot busts in 2011, second-highest in NYC history.
On the other side Black, Latino and progressive White elected officials have increased the volume of their critiques. Many Black and Latino electeds have their own personal narrative here, having been picked up unnecessarily by the NYPD sometime in their own past. Trying to channel those real lived experiences into police reform in Albany is so far ringing on deaf (White) ears, however.
Fortunately, it appears that the NYPD practices are finally going to be a mayoral election issue in 2013. More data is being released under public information access laws. Current and former officers of the NYPD are revealing the pressure they underwent to concoct the pretexts for "lawful" stops and frisks. NEW YORK (AP) ? Herbert Breslin, the hard-driving manager who helped propel Luciano Pavarotti to international fame during the 36 years they worked together, has died, his wife said Thursday. He was 87.
Breslin collapsed at his hotel in Nice, France, on Wednesday and died at a hospital there, his wife, Carol, said from their apartment in New York. She said she was told doctors believed he died of a heart attack.
His death was first reported by Anne Midgette of The Washington Post, co-author with Breslin of the 2004 book "The King and I," which detailed Breslin's work with Pavarotti.
Under Breslin's guidance, Pavarotti moved beyond opera houses to become an entertainment star who performed at arenas, stadiums and even Las Vegas. The rotund tenor also appeared on television shows and an American Express commercial.
"That I think was the essence of our plan together," Breslin said during a 2004 interview on radio station WQXR.
Born on Oct. 1, 1924, Breslin became an opera fan as he grew up in New York.
After working in public relations for Chrysler and the Bulova Watch Co., he became an unpaid publicist for the Santa Fe Opera, then started his own company in New York near Carnegie Hall, Herbert Breslin Public Relations. His first three clients were sopranos Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne. He also played a big role in the career of pianist Alicia de Larrocha.
Known for boasting about his clients and his sometimes profane language, Breslin started with Pavarotti in 1967, six years after the singer's professional debut and a year before he first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera. They were introduced by Terence McEwen of London Records when Pavarotti was the cover singer for Carlo Begonzi for a Carnegie Hall performance of Verdi's Requiem with conductor Herbert von Karajan and the orchestra of Milan's Teatro alla Scala.
Breslin started as Pavarotti's publicist and became his manager. They worked together through 2002 ? five years before Pavarotti's death.
Their relationship soured in their later years together, especially after Pavarotti signed with promoter Tibor Rudas for Three Tenors concerts with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.
In "The King and I," Breslin detailed Pavarotti's behind-the-scenes life, telling tales of gluttony and mistresses and confirming rumors that the tenor couldn't read music.
"He didn't like to study at all," Breslin said during the WQXR interview.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, Breslin is survived by daughter Andrea, son Eric and four grandchildren. His wife said she had not yet determined funeral arrangements.

It contains dissonance chords and a lot of guitar experimentation. Especially the second track which clock over 9 minutes takes time to experiment. Not often heard in this genre are more silent passages with screeching effects and other chaotic experiments. Even Gorgutz didn't have long tracks for long avant garde experiments. The grunts sound impressive.The songs are quiet slow; especially the second one. The last song is the fastest one and therefor a good ending track.
The production of this death metal record is incredibly good. It's no wall of sound, but carefully produced full bass notes and a lot of sounds in the mid-spectrum. Negativa does use the stereo effect to the fullest which create a broad sound. Because of the good sound, continual interesting use of dissonance and avant-garde experiments I cannot give this effort less then five stars: a death metal masterpiece! This is especially recommended to fans of Voivod and Gorgutz.
