Providence Medical Center offers Community Unique Orthopaedic Fracture Program

Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., has created a unique program to serve the residents of Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties called the Orthopaedic Fracture Program.

The Orthopaedic Fracture Program provides prompt evaluation and treatment of fractures for all adults, but is especially designed to care for geriatric patients.

Often, older adults experience fractures of the ankle, arm, wrist or hip as the result of a slip and fall.

In fact, more than 90 percent of hip fractures occur in adults who are 65 or older.

?I may see as many as three hip fracture patients a day now,? says John Vani, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon with Providence who was instrumental in helping create the Fracture Program. ?As our population ages, we can expect those numbers to increase in the coming years. ?By standardizing and streamlining patient care, Providence will be better equipped to care for patients in their 80s, 90s and 100s today and well into the future.?

The Providence Orthopaedic Fracture Program is modeled after the hospital?s successful Joint Center.

?Our goal is to standardize care and expedite the process from admission to surgery. We want to repair the patient?s fracture within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital. We have shifted our thinking regarding fracture repair,? says Karen Orr, R.N., M.S.N., M.B.A., C.M.S.R.N., director of the Providence Joint and Spine Centers and the 4 North Surgical Unit. ?We now consider it an urgent surgery, rather than an elective surgery.?

Research shows promptly repairing the patient?s fracture results in a shorter length of stay, lower infection rates, dedicated patient care and reduced treatment costs.

The Providence Orthopaedic Fracture Program features a multidisciplinary team of providers including board-certified/eligible orthopaedic surgeons, internal medicine physicians, physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, registered nurses, pharmacists and case managers.

Fracture patients are cared for on the hospital?s newest surgical care unit, 4 North.

The program also emphasizes rehabilitation and individualized care; participation by family and/or friends who serve as the patient?s coaches during the recovery process; and coordinated education for patients and family members.

Like the Providence Joint Center, Fracture Program patients begin physical and occupational therapy the first day after surgery and participate in physical therapy daily.

?Early therapy is essential to the recovery process and helping our patients return to their pre-injury activity level,? Orr adds.

Another essential component of the Orthopaedic Fracture Program is communication with the patient?s orthopaedic and primary care physicians; coach/family members; and if necessary, the long-term care or skilled nursing facility the patient is released to.

?It?s important for our community to know that Providence has the only dedicated Fracture Program in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties,? Dr. Vani says. ?If you or someone you know suffers a fracture, your chances of having a positive, long-term outcome are better if you come to Providence.?
