WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major tobacco companies must take out advertisements saying they deliberately deceived the U.S. public about the danger and addictiveness of cigarettes, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
The ruling in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia aims to finalize the wording of the advertisements that the judge first ordered in 2006 after finding the companies violated federal racketeering law.
Tobacco companies fought a public admission of deception, calling it a violation of their free speech rights.
U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler rejected the companies' position, finding that the final wording - which the companies and the U.S. Justice Department have fought over for years - is factual and not controversial.
There are five different statements that the companies will be required to advertise.
One of them begins: "A federal court has ruled that the defendant tobacco companies deliberately deceived the American public by falsely selling and advertising low tar and light cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes."
The advertisements will be placed in media that are still to be determined, and they will be different from the warning labels that already are on tobacco products.
"The government regularly requires wrongdoers to make similar disclosures in a number of different contexts," Kessler wrote, calling the language "basic, uncomplicated".
A spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, which had urged the strong language, had no immediate comment.
Two of the largest companies, Altria Group Inc and Reynolds American Inc, did not immediately return messages requesting comment. The companies could continue to fight the language with another appeal in a case that began in 1999 with the government's racketeering charges.

The Powerball jackpot is climbing to record levels as I released a new book, Life Lessons From the Lottery: Protecting Your Money in a Scary World. It is a follow up to my 2008 best-selling book called Son of a Son of a Gambler: Winners, Losers and What to Do When You Win the Lottery.
If you win the jackpot, follow this advice carefully.
1. Tell as few people as possible (preferably no one) that you won.
2. Take a deep breath and make some good, long-term decisions. You don't have to cash the ticket today.
3. Work with a financial adviser who works with more money than you have.
4. Take the money in annual payments instead of the lump sum.
5. Use some of the money to give back to society.
Those are five simple rules that about 90 percent of lottery winners don't follow.
1. Tell as few people as possible (preferably no one) that you won.
If you can keep your jackpot quiet, do so. As I told Rebecca Jarvis during an interview on CBS Morning News, "Once you have told the world that received money that you never expected to have, everyone has their hand out, and you are not prepared for it." I once told a young, single, publicly known lottery winner that he had just become the best-looking man in his city. He was realistic enough to know that that wasn't really the case.
2. Take a deep breath and make some good, long-term decisions. You don't have to cash the ticket today.
Some people can't wait to cash their ticket. There have been stories about people camping out in front of lottery offices overnight with the winning ticket. Most lotteries allow you several months or a year to cash a winning ticket. The money will still be there in a month or so. Take some time to figure out what you are going to do with the money and how you are going to do it.
3. Work with a financial advisor who works with more money than you have.
There are financial advisors, estate-planning attorneys and trust officers who have worked with $100,000,000 or more. The scorekeeper for your local bowling league is not one of them. People will often hire a friend as opposed to someone who really knows about big money. A good friend would tell you the situation is too complicated for them and help you find some real experts. A lottery winner has tax, estate and planning issues that they didn't have the week before.
4. Take the money in annual payments instead of the lump sum.
Roughly 98 percent of all lottery winners ignore this advice, but I continue to preach the mantra. Taking the payments over time allows you to adjust, with the money coming in on a gradual basis. If you make mistakes and lose all your money the first few years, you have 24 more opportunities to get it right. There are also some tax advantages to taking the money over time, as you are taxed on the money as you receive it. That may not be relevant with $100 million, as you are always going to be in the highest tax bracket, but a person who gets $1 million and takes $50,000 a year might be able to save overall.
5. Give back to society.
There are many people who have accumulated great wealth, like Rockefeller and Carnegie in the 20th century and Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in this century, who are giving away most of their money during their lifetimes. People who use their wealth to make an impact on society are far happier than those who use it to show off to the neighbors.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Less than 2% of Earth's fossils are preserved in volcanic rock, but researchers have identified a new one: the skull of a rhino that perished in a volcanic eruption 9.2 million years ago. The find is described in a paper published November 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Pierre-Olivier Antoine and colleagues from the University of Montpellier, France.
The fossil, found in Turkey, is thought to be that of a large two-horned rhino common in the Eastern Mediterranean region during that period. According to the researchers, unusual features of the preserved skull suggest that the animal was 'cooked to death' at temperatures that may have approached 500? C, in a volcanic flow similar to that of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy in 79 A.D.
The rhino's grisly death was near-instantaneous, and followed by severe dehydration in the extreme heat of the eruption. As the researchers describe its end, "the body was baked under a temperature approximating 400?C, then dismembered within the pyroclastic flow, and the skull separated from body." The flow of volcanic ash then moved the skull about 30 km north of the eruption site, where it was discovered by the four member research team.
Although other researchers have previously identified fossils of soft-bodied organisms preserved in volcanic ash, organic matter near an active volcanic eruption is usually quickly destroyed by the high temperatures, making a fossil such as this one extremely rare.

BANGKOK (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Sunday launched a three-day Southeast Asia tour, hailing alliances with countries such as Thailand as cornerstones of the administration's deeper commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.
While in Asia, however, Obama will be dividing his attention by monitoring the escalating conflict between Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Obama has been in regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as with Egyptian and Turkish leaders who might hold sway with the Hamas leadership.
Obama landed in Bangkok Sunday afternoon, his schedule packed with cultural sightseeing, a royal audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a private meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a joint press conference and an official dinner.
He will also visit Myanmar and Cambodia in his first trip abroad since winning a second term.
The visit to Thailand, less than 18 hours long, is a gesture of friendship to a long-standing partner and major non-NATO ally.
Still, the two countries have faced strains, most recently after the 2006 military coup that deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Obama's visit offers an opportunity to restate and broaden the relationship.
"It was very important for us to send a signal to the region that allies are going to continue to be the foundation of our approach" to establishing a more prominent presence in Asia, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with the president aboard Air Force One.
Obama is also seeking to open new markets for U.S. businesses; the United States is Thailand's third biggest trading partner, behind China and Japan. Becoming a counterweight to China in the region is a keystone of Obama's so-called pivot to the Asia-Pacific region.
Obama's trip comes on the heels of meetings in Thailand between Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and his Thai counterparts on security and military cooperation on issues ranging from fighting weapons proliferation to disaster relief to countering piracy.
Alluding to the 2006 coup, Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said in a speech ahead of the trip last week that Obama would build on Panetta's outreach to reinforce the relationship and "support the continued peaceful restoration of democratic order after a turbulent period."
Obama will visit the Wat Pho Royal Monastery, a cultural must-see in Bangkok, before paying a courtesy call to ailing 86-year-old, U.S.-born King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his hospital quarters. The king, the longest serving living monarch, was born in Cambridge, Mass., and studied in Europe.
The centerpiece of the Asia trip comes Monday when Obama travels to Myanmar, the once reclusive and autocratic state that has begun instituting democratic measures. Obama has eased sanction on the country, also known as Burma, and his visit will be the first there by a sitting U.S. president.
Obama aides see Myanmar as not only a success story but also as a signal to other countries that the U.S. will reward democratic behavior.
"If Burma can continue to succeed in a democratic transition, then that can potentially send a powerful message regionally and around the world...that if countries do take the right decisions, we have to be there with incentives," Rhodes said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The federal agency that insures pensions for more than 40 million Americans last year ran the widest deficit in its 38-year history.
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. said Friday that its deficit grew to $34 billion for the budget year that ended Sept. 30. That compares with a $26 billion shortfall in the previous year.
Pension obligations grew by $12 billion to $119 billion last year. Assets used to cover those obligations increased by only $4 billion to $85 billion.
The agency has now run deficits for 10 straight years. The gap has grown wider in recent years because the weak economy has triggered more corporate bankruptcies and failed pension plans.
If the trend continues, the agency could struggle to pay benefits without an infusion of taxpayer funds.
Agency Director Josh Gotbaum said continued deficits "will ultimately threaten" the PBGC's ability to pay pension benefits to retired workers.
"There's no imminent threat that we're going to stop cutting checks," Gotbaum said during a conference call with reporters. However, he said, Congress must act "long before 10 years from now" to increase the insurance premiums that companies pay to the agency.
The Obama administration has proposed raising the premiums and tailoring them to the size of companies and their level of financial risk. Under the plan, bigger companies and those at greater risk of failing would pay larger premiums. The fees haven't been raised in six years.
Companies whose pension plans failed in the latest year, with the agency taking them over, included Friendly Ice Cream Corp., law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf and Olan Mills. Inc.
The PBGC joined with unions at American Airlines earlier this year to oppose the company's plan to terminate its pension plans. The move would have dumped billions of dollars of new obligations on the agency. American ended up freezing pensions for most workers instead of terminating them.
The American Benefits Council, which represents businesses, called the $34 billion deficit figure misleading and said it was based on faulty math.
"The public should not be led to believe the PBGC is in danger of a bailout, and Congress and the Obama administration should not use this number as a pretext to raise (insurance) premiums," the group said in a statement. The group has been critical of the PBGC.
The PBGC was created in 1974 as a government insurance program for traditional employer-paid pension plans. If an employer can no longer support its pension plan, the agency takes over the assets and liabilities, and pays promised benefits to retirees up to certain limits.
The agency backs defined-benefit plans, which are most prevalent in auto manufacturing, steel, airlines and other industries.
The number of companies offering traditional pension plans has shrunk dramatically in recent decades. U.S. employees increasingly have turned to defined-contribution plans such as 401(k)s to fund their retirement.
The PBGC has been in the red for 31 of its 38 years of operation. It did have surpluses in some years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when fewer companies failed.

House majority leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) is not only agin? any expansion of gambling, he?s also best buds with Las Vegas Sands? boss Sheldon Adelson, who has not been shy about expressing his ?moral opposition? to online gambling. A report earlier this week on Roll Call suggested House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) ?could be amenable to a deal? on online poker, provided Reid is willing to give ground on other issues closer to GOP hearts, but the ?insiders? who made this claim re Boehner?s alleged sympathies were not identified.
The Reid/Kyl bill got a measure of support earlier this week from the National Association of Convenience Stores, which asked its members to contact their congressional reps to express their approval of the bill?s prohibition of ?instant win? lottery ticket online sales. Nevada?s governor is also strongly behind Reid/Kyl, but the rest of the nation?s governors have collectively referred to the legislation as ?an unnecessary preemption of state authority.? US Indian tribes also remain highly suspicious of any federal attempt to usurp their online gaming opportunities.
The uphill climb facing the Reid/Kyl bill was a point of discussion at Thursday?s Nevada Gaming Commission hearing on MGM Resorts? online poker license application. Commissioner Tony Alamo noted that there wouldn?t be much point in MGM launching an online poker operation if only Nevada?s 3.5m residents were eligible to play. Alamo was likely only telling the MGM reps something they are all too aware of when he said intrastate online poker couldn?t hope to provide the casino giant with anything more than ?an incremental revenue stream.?

KiwiRail has failed to find a buyer for all of its Hillside manufacturing plant in Dunedin, but has sold the foundry.
The 115 staff at the South Dunedin site were this morning given the grim news that most will be losing their jobs.
"Despite a rigorous sales campaign there simply wasn't a buyer out there for the whole operation," KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said.?
The Hillside foundry has conditionally been sold to Australian manufacturing company Bradken, which will continue to operate at Hillside and supplying parts to KiwiRail as required. That sale was expected to be completed early next year, Quinn said.
"KiwiRail's freight business will now operate the heavy lift facility and the rest of the site will be progressively closed down over the next few months as work is either completed or transferred to the Hutt Workshops near Wellington."
Hillside has a long association with rail engineering. A plant was first built on its South Dunedin site in 1875, and the height of demand for its services around 1200 people worked at the 7ha complex.
In recent years KiwiRail has steadily decreased the amount of work it sends to the workshop, opting for overseas tenders to manufacture engines and rolling stock rather than accept bids from Hillside for such contracts.
In July last year 44 Hillside staff were made redundant, and in May this year KiwiRail put the complex up for sale.
That process has dragged on for six months, creating a great deal of anxiety for workers.
KiwiRail CEO Jim Quinn briefed Hillside staff about the sale this morning. He said at this stage foundry staff would be offered employment by Bradken, some would continue to work for KiwiRail Freight in the heavy lift area, and there would be redeployment opportunities to Hutt Workshop in Wellington.
It is believed 90 jobs will be lost at Hillside.
"KiwiRail alone could not afford the future operating costs to keep Hillside open in the face of this decreasing work," Quinn said in a statement.
"Hillside has made an important contribution to the development of rail in New Zealand since 1875 and this won't be forgotten. Many will be sad about its closure, however change is necessary as we continue to build a sustainable rail business for the challenges ahead.
"We will be working closely with the Hillside team and their representatives as we progress to the next stage and start to wind down operations."
Australian-based Bradken, has 34 manufacturing facilities throughout the world, including Dunedin. The firm makes cast, fabricated and machined components, and offers maintenance and refurbishment services.
The Rail and Maritime Transport Union said the partial sale was cold comfort to the nearly 90 workers facing redundancy.
"KiwiRail was been trying to sell Hillside since April, because ever since last year when the company decided to buy rolling stock overseas the viability of the workshops was thrown into question," said union acting general secretary Todd Valster.
"The fact the foundry will remain open under the new owner and is of some solace, and KiwiRail's decision to retain eight jobs to do heavy lift maintenance on the site makes sense, but the fact is that the closure of the manufacturing facility is a body blow," he said.
Dunedin South Labour MP Clare Curran - whose electorate office is across the road from Hillisde - has been at the forefront of the battle to keep the plant running.
She was furious at today's announcement, which she called "economic sabotage".
"The consequences will be felt not only by the workers and their families, but by the wider community and businesses as well," Curran said.
"Many suppliers and sub-contractors will also lose work because of today's decision. This was another of the Government's 'done deals'. It has pushed KiwiRail to the brink and KiwiRail's board let it happen. Under this Government there will never be a train built in Dunedin again. This is terrible news for the city."

Though the most HTC would say about their patent settlement with Apple was that they didn't expect the process to "have an adverse material impact on the financials of the company," analyst Shaw Wu says they may be paying upwards of $6 - $8 per device in licensing fees starting in 2013. This would span both Android and Windows Phone devices, and could amount to between $180 and $280 million in fees. That's not an awful lot to Apple, but sure is more substantial than HTC was letting on.
Though Apple isn't doing quite as well in their patent battles against Samsung lately, it's understandable that they may be less willing to settle with a manufacturer in a much more powerful position than HTC. HTC has been hurting for some time now, and if these licensing fees turn out to be true, it won't do their balance sheet any favors.
Of course, analysts are well-known for their imagination, so take the $6 - $8 figure with a grain of salt. Is there any chance that Apple and HTC actually resolved their patent complaints without money changing hands? Maybe they reached some sort of cross-licensing deal?

We know the Romney and Obama campaigns are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into television and online advertising in a bid to capture precious votes in Tuesday?s election. Every vote counts, of course?but some count more than others. And some, it seems, are more easily bought. Both factors play a role in how much money the campaigns are willing to spend to win over any given individual, according to research by Abine, an online privacy company.
How much are the candidates spending on your vote in particular? Abine has come up with a quick quiz that will give you an educated estimate. (NOTE: This story does not represent a Slate endorsement of Abine, a private company, or its products. We just liked the quiz and wanted to share it with you.)
To arrive at the figures, the company started by simply averaging the campaigns? total ad spending?including that of super PACs?across the total number of voters. It came up with an average of $22 per vote. Then it weighted the votes based on targeting data to which the campaigns have access via a combination of online tracking tools and offline records. Which state you live in matters a lot, of course. But while TV ad spending depends heavily on the overall demographics of a given media market, online advertising campaigns can take into account much more specific, personal information. For instance, your voting history, available via public records, indicates whether your vote is likely to be up for grabs this election. (Data brokers have begun to offer services that tie this type of offline information to your online identity, for a price, says Abine?s Sarah Downey. Campaigns may have access to it if you?ve set up an account on their websites or ?liked? their Facebook pages.) And even if you don?t live in a swing state, you could still be valuable to the campaigns if you have a lot of politically active Facebook friends with whom you might share your political sentiments and voting plans.
On the other hand, if you don?t spend much time online or if you block tracking cookies on your computer, the campaigns might not be able to ascertain that information. That makes them less likely to target you with ads, so they are spending less to win your vote.
To determine how each of these factors influences spending, Abine looked at actual going rates for online political ads targeting various demographics, co-founder and vice president Rob Shavell told me. Once the company had its estimates, it ran them by Washington, D.C., political ad firms and lobbyists to ?sanity check? its conclusions, he added.
Abine is using this quiz to help promote its online privacy tools, which aim to prevent websites from tracking your activity as you browse the Web. But it?s worth noting that blocking these tracking efforts won?t spare you from online advertising altogether. It will just make it less likely that the ads you see will be aimed at you specifically.
I?m a New York resident who spends a lot of time online, has plenty of politically active Facebook friends, and eschews online privacy tools, so Abine estimates the candidates are spending $25 to win me over. The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk, which took place across stunning Kerry Way trails in July, was once again a tremendous success, with over 200 walkers from counties all over Ireland participating, and collectively raising an amazing ?62,508 towards cancer research programmes at Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC).
The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk is a 70km fundraising event that has gone from strength to strength in the past seven years, contributing over ?500,000 to CCRC, which will help researchers to translate lab discoveries into new cancer treatment opportunities for poor prognosis and incurable cancers.
At the recent presentation of funds raised from the event, Dr Declan Soden, CCRC general manager, led a minute?s silence for everyone who has lost loved ones to the disease, which takes the lives of 7,500 people annually in Ireland.
This was followed by the release of more than 100 balloons in their memory at a barbecue held at Tom Crean?s Fish and Wine Bar in Kenmare.
The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk has earned the support of many famous names over the years, including Se?n Kelly, D?ith? ? S?, John McHenry and Kevin Kehily, and this year Pat Falvey and Pat Spillane led the way.
Dr Soden said: "On behalf of the staff and patients of the centre we would like extend our sincere gratitude to all participants and supporters of the Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk, without whom this event would not have been possible.
"A huge thank you to a number of people who give their time annually on a voluntary basis, including the organising committee, walk leaders, sweepers, ground crew and civil defence."
The Kerry Way Cancer Walk was founded by Cobh Walking Club and has grown to become one of the centre?s annual signature events.
The centre does not have any source of annual state funding and is therefore reliant on the voluntary fundraising efforts of the public and events such as the Kerry Way walk.
Dr Soden said that in terms of research activities, CCRC continues to focus on developing treatments for poor prognosis and incurable cancers. Over the last 10 years it has brought five cancer treatments from laboratory to clinical trial, with three more in preparation over the coming months.
"Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Ireland and we are working to change these statistics through three research programmes targeted to improve survival rates from lung cancer," Dr Soden said.

I created it to develop and distribute my writing and to connect with new people. Three years on, my blog has helped create a very successful side career (I already have a day job in the government) as a writer, speaker and community TV presenter.
My blog could be classed as a lifestyle blog with a difference. I write about food, fashion, live music, (failed) romance and blogging. I also write a lot about what it?s like to live with a chronic illness and visible facial difference ? a severe skin condition called Ichthyosis form erythroderma (meaning scaly red skin).
I write about the medical and social challenges of this condition. I also write a little about body image diversity, highlighting the need for people with visible facial differences to be represented more widely in the media. In doing so, I receive emails and comments from many people with similar skin conditions and various chronic illnesses, as well as from people without illnesses, telling me I?ve helped them in some way. I?ve given them information, hope or courage to tell their own story.
Shortly after starting my blog, I submitted some blog posts to a state government-run disability website called DiVine. The editor asked me to write for them, and I?ve since written for Mamamia, ABC?s Ramp Up, The Hoopla and News Limited, plus a number of guest posts on blogs, as well as shared my story with journalists in the mainstream media.
In addition to the writing, I?ve shared my story through speaking.

I started speaking about five years ago at a workplace event for International Day of People with Disability. Speaking in front of colleagues was good for developing my confidence. Mid way through 2010 I auditioned for a role on a disability TV show called No Limits, and I was cast as a presenter. We discuss disability issues on a panel and interview a wide range of people. This has been great because I have learnt a lot about disability issues, culture, history and language, and met some amazing friends.
I really enjoy sharing my story face to face with an audience, and I also believe that because of my appearance, a speech often has greater impact than the written word. Because of my blog, I have an archive of stories to share, and I can draw on these and modify them for various audiences. I speak about living with Ichthyosis ? hoping to make people laugh and think, and change their perceptions of people with visibly different appearances. I also speak about blogging and social media.
I have spoken to many audiences including young people at the Royal Children?s Hospital, potential sponsors at a community television event, doctors and genetic counsellors, bloggers, and at the Australian Public Service Commission?s ethics and social media conference
It?s funny how speaking at one event, or being involved in a particular community, can help you get to another.
My contacts in the disability and blogging networks have been fantastic in putting me forward for speaking opportunities ? including radio appearances. The lovely Nicole Avery from Planning with Kids asked me to speak at the AusBlogCon in 2011. My good friend and ABC Ramp Up editor Stella Young put me forward for an ABC interview. Members of No Limits asked me to feature in a 15 minute community radio documentary. Just recently, I was filmed for a federal government social media initiative for International Day of People with Disability.
The best speaking opportunities have come from blogging! You can take your blog to the speaking circuit.
I gave a speech at my work about blogging as an effective way of story telling. Someone in the audience was a Girl Guides leader and she asked me to speak at the next Guides meeting. I did, and at that meeting, I met a woman who worked at a disability organisation. She then asked me to speak at her organisation?s youth training event. When I arrived at the event, there were 600 school children that I had to speak in front of.
And in August 2011 I received a tweet from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), based at the University of the West of England, in Bristol, UK. They had read a blog post of mine, and shared it with their readers. I checked out their website, was interested in what they do, and contacted them to see how I could work with them. They asked me to review a computer based psychology program about appearance for young people.
Earlier this year some of the CAR team came to Melbourne for a conference and they met me. They asked me to speak at their Appearance Matters conference in Bristol in July 2012. Of course I said yes!! It was such a good experience ? I spoke to around 50 academics and doctors, and received great feedback. My speech is here.
My hospital?s dermatology department has been great in helping me get to speak in England, and they too have given me speaking opportunities. I now alternate between patient and speaker, educating dermatologists and geneticists about both the medical and social elements of this condition.
Diversifying from your blog means that you can develop and share your skills in other areas, which in turn could earn you some money. While I don?t work with many PR companies, I feel the writing and speaking opportunities given to me by community groups, hospitals and universities are far more beneficial to my career ambitions.
If you are thinking about taking your blog from the written to spoken word, here are some of my tips:
Continue blogging. Your blog is a great resource for content for your speeches, and also for sharing your completed speeches (transcripts and video) with your readers who couldn?t be at your speaking event.
Attend events where you?ll meet bloggers and other people in your interest areas. Share your work on social media ? you never know who might discover it. Offer to do speaking in your workplace or local community ? your church or a school are good places to start.
Attend Toastmasters groups or book into a short course. Practice in front of your family or friends, or even in meetings at work.
I?ve not done Toastmasters, but I did a lot of presentations during my university degrees, and I?m fortunate that through doing community TV, I can watch myself back and find areas where I can improve.
As a blogger, you are often an expert in a certain field ? parenting, cooking, fashion. As a speaker, I think it?s best to speak about what you know too. It makes for an authentic speech. I feel most confident speaking about myself ? my skin condition and blogging. When I write a blog post, I write it how I speak or think. This means my blog posts can often easily be translated into a speech.
You may be speaking about the same topic at all of the events you?re invited to, but your audience demographic will not always be the same. Your content may need to be tailored to suit your audiences. For example, I have used simpler language for children, provided technical explanations for non social media users and covered more strategic content for academics and doctors (I included parts of my Masters thesis for these speeches).
You don?t need to be like an evangelical speaker to have an impact. I recommend you speak clearly, maintain eye contact with your audience, and try to make them think and make them laugh.
In my writing and speaking I am always honest and authentic. I hope not to come across as seeking pity. I am always myself, always realistic, but never sympathy seeking. If I can make someone laugh at a really unfortunate situation that I?ve been faced with, I know I?ve done my job right.

LONDON (Reuters) - London's cash-strapped police force may sell its New Scotland Yard headquarters as part of plans to save 500 million pounds.
The 1960s-era complex in the Victoria district could fetch between 150-200 million pounds, property agents said. The Metropolitan Police bought the block from Land Securities in 2008 for 122 million pounds.
The possible sale is part of a wider cost-cutting drive to shrink the force's 900,000 square metres estate by one third by 2016, the Met said in an e-mailed statement.
"We won't keep older buildings any longer than we need to...Our plans relate to all areas of the estate, including all HQ buildings and potentially moving New Scotland Yard from its current location," a spokeswoman said, adding that no final decision had been made.
The 20-storey block, surrounded by concrete blast barriers and famous for its revolving sign, will need 50 million pounds of maintenance over the next few years, the police said.
Should the sale go ahead, it may move its headquarters to a smaller building in the Westminster district.
The Victoria neighbourhood has been targeted by redevelopers including Land Securities, which is building prime offices, shops and over 200 homes in the district.
Last week, the government sold Admiralty Arch, a gateway between The Mall and Trafalgar Square in London, for 60 million pounds to Spanish investor Rafael Serrano as part of a cost-cutting drive.
