New York (Reuters Health) ? Close to half of all teenagers with an autism spectrum disorder are bullied at school, says a survey of their parents.
The results, published Monday in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, suggest that rate is much higher than the estimated 11 percent of bullied kids in the general population.
Previous studies have found kids and teens who are bullied tend to be more depressed, lonely and anxious and do worse in school than those who aren?t picked on, according to the researchers.
That means bullying could make things extra difficult for those with autism, who may already struggle more in school than other kids.
The researchers say the findings suggest schools should target their anti-bullying campaigns toward the more vulnerable populations, such as children with autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
?I would argue that the bullying interventions that we?re using now, if not tailored, are ineffective,? said Paul R. Sterzing, the study?s lead author from the University of California, Berkley.
He added that the problem may also grow along with the number of kids being diagnosed with autism. It?s now estimated that about one in 88 children in the U.S. has an autism spectrum disorder, which include autism and Asperger?s syndrome.
Using records from a 2001 survey of 920 parents, Sterzing and his colleagues found that 46 percent of parents said their autistic teenagers were the victims of bullying and 15 percent thought their children were bullies themselves. Nine percent of moms and dads said their kids were both victims and bullies.
While the researchers said autistic children were picked on at a much higher rate than current estimates for kids in general, the proportion who were bullies or both victims and bullies was about average.
Sterzing told Reuters Health that teens with autism and ADHD or those who had autism and were in regular classes were both especially likely to be victims of bullying.
That, however, does not mean kids with autism should be separated from their peers and put in special education classes. Instead, Sterzing said it could mean that regular classes haven?t been doing a good job of including kids with autism.
Debra J. Pepler, who researches bullying among vulnerable children at York University in Toronto but wasn?t involved in the new study, told Reuters Health there are some strategies that may help reduce bullying toward autistic children.
Specifically, she said classes can create ?circles of support,? which are groups of children who are educated about a student?s condition and able to provide help and support.
She added that it?s important to set the expectation for the classroom ?that everyone has the right to be safe, and just because someone is different doesn?t mean it?s OK to make fun of them or bully them.?

As expected,?Apple is holding an event at?10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET,?Wednesday, Sept. 12, at?the?Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.?
The Cupertino-based company has just invited members of the press to?the event, where they will likely be the first to hear about the next-generation iPhone ??which, if you're reading things into the shadow on the invitation, may be called the iPhone 5. (Even though that name would make very little sense.)?
Based on the latest rumors, the next-generation iPhone will look pretty darn similar to the iPhone 4S,?but with a ?slightly thinner and larger screen?and?a two-tone body. The device's display is expected to be?4 inches instead of 3.5 inches?in diagonal, and elongated (so that its aspect ratio is wider).
As far as the device's?guts go,?9to5?Mac's Mark Gurman says?that prototype version of the next-generation iPhone is?rocking 1GB of RAM (which would double what is believed to be the current device's amount of RAM).?iMore's Rene Ritchie adds?that the device will be 4G LTE compatible???just like the latest iPad.
Both reports,?as well as more recent part leaks, suggest that the next iPhone will?use a smaller 19-pin port?rather than the wider 30-in port found on current iPhones, iPads and iPods. (Say goodbye to your old chargers?? or hello to some awkward adapter???if that's?the case.)
iMore's Rene Ritchie?? who nailed the date for the upcoming press event ? suggests that the new smartphone will ship nine days after it is announced, on Sept. 21. This date lines up with?what we've been hearing for a while, so we're keeping it circled on our calendars for the time being.
Keep in mind that all the details, other than those gleaned from Apple's invitations, are guesswork. We try our best to assess rumors by using a magical formula which relies on the track record of a source or reporter, the habits of the folks in Cupertino, plain ol' logic, and experience. But until Sept. 12, anything could happen.?So feel free to keep daydreaming until we officially discover?which rumors started out with kernels of truth.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse striking miners at a gold mine near Johannesburg on Monday, the latest outbreak in a wave of labor militancy spreading from platinum mining into other parts of the sector.
The unrest occurred less than three weeks after police shot dead 34 striking miners at Lonmin's Marikana mine, the deadliest security incident since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.
The Marikana shooting shocked South Africa and marred the image of the continent's biggest economy, as the full extent of a breakdown in labor relations in the mining sector became apparent.
World platinum prices have risen more than 10 percent since the shooting.
In Monday's incident, mine owner Gold One International Ltd said about 60 workers at its Modder East site went on a wildcat strike, blocking half its employees from reporting for their shifts.
"The group, however, refused to disperse. The South African Police Service had to use teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the group," it said in a statement.
Police spokeswoman Pinky Tsinyane said four people were injured in the incident, which she described as a "shoot-out" between protesting ex-miners, miners and security guards.
"Police are investigating a case of attempted murder," she said, adding that four arrests had been made. "We understand that the ex-miners were assaulting the miners who were coming to work this morning."
In a separate dispute - but one born of similar social conditions - an illegal strike involving a quarter of the 46,000-strong workforce at the KCD East gold mine, owned by world No. 4 bullion producer Gold Fields, entered its third working day.
MARIKANA MINERS RELEASED
The Marikana unrest stemmed ultimately from a turf war in the platinum sector between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the small but militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
The government has been trying to broker a peace accord to cool off the feud before it does lasting damage to the platinum industry and spreads across a sector that accounts for 8 percent of South African output.
On Monday, the first of 270 miners detained at the Marikana shootings were released from police custody after prosecutors withdrew murder charges brought under an obscure apartheid-era security law for the police killing of their colleagues.
The public outcry at the murder charges soured the already testy relationship between the unions, Lonmin management and the government, which has been trying to put a lid on the mess and end a wildcat strike approaching its fourth week.
Labor Minister Mildred Oliphant, part of a committee trying to broker an end to the dispute, raised hopes of a breakthrough by saying management and workers had agreed in principle to sign a two-year wage agreement.
But unions involved in the talks said a return to work was by no means certain.
"I don't share the same optimism," said Gideon du Plessis of the Solidarity trade union. "The workers have made it clear that they will not go back to work until such time that their wage demands are met."
Lonmin shares in Johannesburg rose nearly 4 percent on hopes of a speedy resumption of mining, but lost most of those gains as hopes of a breakthrough faded. Lonmin said only 4.5 percent of its shift workers turned up on Monday.
"An indefinite strike will ultimately threaten the jobs of more than 40,000 workers. We cannot go on indefinitely without normalizing operations and still escape the consequences of the mine not being operational," it said in a statement.
Many of the AMCU-affiliated miners have accused the NUM of caring more about its political connections to the ruling African National Congress than about the plight of workers deep underground.
The 3,000 striking Marikana workers are mostly rock drill operators demanding 12,500 rand ($1,500) a month in basic wages, more than double what they receive now.

The financial giant of today?s world would have to be the mighty Foreign Exchange market. It has an astounding amount in trading volume and it is a highly active market that stretches through the major points of the world.
Also referred to as the currency market, FX or more commonly as Forex, it is where international currencies are traded without the need for a central market. There are only major points of trading around the world for the the many different kinds of buyers and sellers, and the activity does not stop all throughout the week. The comparative values of the different currencies are determined in Forex.?Check out our website for more on forex:?True ECN.
Forex trading is very much known for its high liquidity level, its decentralization in a geographical level, the extremely long and active trading time, the many elements that cause changes in exchange rates, and also the trading volume.
The foreign exchange market has made the conversion of currency possible, which has changed the face of international trading and investments. For instance the United States is able to trade in commodities from the European Union members and be able to pay in Euros despite the fact that the US Dollar is their local currency. Immediate speculation of currencies? value and the interest rate differential between two currencies are also made possible because of the foreign exchange market. Go here to learn more about forex and it?s workings: IC Markets.
What happens in a standard Forex transaction is that one trader buys an amount of one currency by paying an amount of another currency. Hence the currencies are shown in pairs.
Without the right equipment and knowledge, institutions and individuals will definitely lose a lot of money in the world of foreign exchange as it is reputed for its high risk factor. There will always be a possibility of losing a large amount of funds and so it is important to trade with what you can live without. ?

Every year, insurers release the details of some of their more bizarre filings.
Vacationers always experience strange things while they?re away from home, and those with travel insurance may need to make a claim, which, at times, means that the details of the story could end up on one of the strangest filing lists.
Allianz Global Assistance has released its own bizarre claims, which include the following.
? A tourist was held at gunpoint in the New York subway system by a gunman who was dressed in a large, smiling, big eared Mickey Mouse mask. He was robbed of his valuables but was uninjured. He made a police report and his travel insurance company reimbursed him for the costs of replacing what had been stolen.
Most of these travel insurance claims are quite serious at the time, as odd as they are.
? A couple travelling through Bali were visiting a temple, when they had their bag stolen. Though they had initially expected to see a criminal running away, when they had a second look, they realized that it had been a monkey that took the bag. Children saw the event happen and chased down the monkey before luring him closer with food in order to exchange the stolen sack for some food. However, the monkey became frustrated with all of the confusion and tossed the bag off the top of a cliff. The travel insurance that had been purchased by the couple paid for the replacement of the bag and its contents.
? A couple on a walking tour in North Queensland had a startling plot unfold around them when the hunting excursion went awry. The couple began feeling uncomfortable with the situation and took off from the tour, feeling certain that their own tour guide was hunting them instead of the game that they were out to seek. However, when they made the claim to their travel insurance company, it was refused as the insurer determined that the couple had never been in any actual danger while on their tour.
Travel insurance companies receive unique stories all the time as a part of their claims, but only a few each year will make it onto their lists of the most bizarre claims.

A few years ago, in a speech introducing the National MS Society?s Fast Forward program, I coined the phrase, ?Hope without a plan is just a dream?. Today I?d like to share a short personal bit of how that saying has come true for Caryn and I.
Ever since returning from our honeymoon in Ireland, Caryn and I had been dreaming of actually shifting to Ireland for a semi-permanent stay. The idea was daunting and fraught with difficult figurative trip wires; not the least of them being the expense of the idea.
This Sunday marks two years since we made a big (make that HUGE) investment in that dream? we began working a plan.
Two years ago, we rented out the main part of our house. We really enjoyed the light and space and layout of our home but we wanted to make Ireland happen as fast as practicable. We moved into the house?s 500 square foot mother-in-law apartment in the basement. With three dogs (at the time) and my MS, we shifted our life into what we called ?The Boat? for its compact size.
With a few modifications like a murphy bed, brightly painted window wells and the same for the entry stairs, we made the best of our small space.
We scrimped and saved and shared space more closely than many college dorm mates. It hasn?t been easy, but The Boat has been home for better than two thirds of our married life. We?ve had to say goodbye to two of our beloved pack right over there under that window. We cried together over MS symptoms on that chaise. We celebrated a Oaxaca-inspired thanksgiving right where I?m typing this blog and cooked that dinner on that little stove. I can see (and nearly reach) all of those places from where I sit.
Sunday marks two years from the initiation of our plan. Sunday also marks 71 days until we spend our first night in County Kerry, Ireland.
Hope, without a plan? Hope without an amazing partner? Hope without love and care and support?
We are nearing the fruition of a dream and we did it by planning and working and forgiving (a lot!) all along the way.
Thank you, Petal. It couldn?t have been done without you!
Wishing you and your family the best of health.
Cheers
Trevis
