The article below from The Salt Lake Tribune is showing the importance
of? the early learning benefits of teaching preschool children many things that will prepare them well for Kindergarten.? The Montessori School is preparing our 27-month old granddaughter and with the help of her mom for Kindergarten and Elementary School.
What are some of the surprising things a 2-year old can do?
At school, she is the greeter of each of her 14 classmates ? saying hello, Ada or Alex, etc.? She was able to put her own jacket on and after one of us started the zipper, she zipped it up to her neck.
She taught herself to recognize when she needed to use the ?pottystool? and had only a few accidents ? since returning to her school she is still very wise at recognizing when she needs to use it. She sat at the table without a high chair and ate her adult food meals with a spoon or fork.
She learned which items were ?sharp? in our junk drawer. She says her ABC?s and can count numbers of items up to 10.? I?m sure there were many other things she did that will help her easily adjust to school in 2 1/2 more years. She has a love of learning that is vital in a child?s life.
The State Board of Education is considering adopting guidelines for what pre-kindergarten schools and parents of preschoolers should be teaching children. That?s an excellent idea.
Those involved in getting children ready for kindergarten need to understand what those kids should know before they enroll in public school. Many private schools, especially those that offer preschool classes, make clear the basics children should have mastered. Public schools would do well to provide the same kind of standard.
The proposal before the board would only be mandatory for public preschools; not for private preschools or for parents. But quality private preschools whose students go on to public schools should be interested in adopting curricula that will help children succeed in kindergarten. And the same is true of parents.
The board would be doing a service by implementing standards, not interfering with parenting, as some board members have suggested. It?s not true that children not yet in school are too young to learn academic concepts. They are learning all the time. Why not direct them toward something more useful than games and television?
The guidelines would simply help parents direct the hours their children spend in play with other children toward such simple goals as learning to recognize that letters form words, becoming familiar with books, learning to count from one to 20, being able to respond to the question ?how many?? by counting, knowing the names of their parents and caregivers and using their fingers to button and zip their own clothing.
Those are tasks that many young children ? but not all ? are taught already at home and at preschool. But, sadly, some children still do not understand those concepts by the time they enter kindergarten. And when kindergarten teachers in Utah?s overcrowded schools find some students lag behind their classmates, they must spend extra time bringing those children up to speed.
Sometimes the children who get a slow start on the journey toward a high school diploma and college degree or a good job never catch up.
Those children can become the dropouts and the chronically unemployed who must rely on social services to help them feed and house themselves and a family.
Early-childhood education, whether it takes place in the home or in a preschool or both, is the foundation of a productive academic experience. Like the foundation of a house, it must be put in place properly or the structure that follows is undermined. And trying to repair it later is usually futile.
As parents, we often feel our children are not capable of much learning before preschool.? Taking time to guide your children in adjusting to and managing their worlds will bring them great pleasure and self-confidence.? They are quite capable of?much more than we realize and it is wonderful fun to watch their special efforts turn into accomplishments as they enjoy early learning benefits.
