Switchable nano magnets may revolutionize data storage: Magnetism of individual molecules switched

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2012) ? Using individual molecules instead of electronic or magnetic memory cells would revolutionise data storage technology, as molecular memories could be thousand-fold smaller. Scientists of Kiel University took a big step towards developing such molecular data storage. They succeeded in selectively switching on and off the magnetism of individual molecules, so-called spin-crossover complexes, by electrons.

The interdisciplinary study is part of the Collaborative Research Centre 677 "Functions by Switching," which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The results prove that it is technically possible to store information using molecules. The study will be published on June 25th in the German science magazine Angewandte Chemie (Applied Chemistry).

"In principle information may be stored in a single molecule. However, techniques that would make such an approach feasible are becoming available just now," explains project leader Professor Richard Berndt of the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics at Kiel University. Since the 1980s scientists are able to image individual molecules on surfaces with scanning tunnelling microscopes, he continues. Current research aims at controlling the characteristics of single molecules in order to facilitate future technical applications. The Collaborative Research Centre 677 "Functions by Switching" at Kiel University is a large-scale project engaged in such investigations, which aim at constructing molecular machines.

The current study is focused on the magnetism of molecules. Using a scanning tunnelling microscope Dr. Thiruvancheril Gopakumar, who carried out the study, was able to switch individual molecules between two magnetic states. Despite their dense packing in a molecular layer he was able to target individual molecules for switching. "Many research groups are striving to control the magnetic characteristics of molecules. Gopakumar's studies have taken us one step ahead," says Berndt.

The molecules (spin-crossover complexes) were synthesised at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at Kiel University. "Even though it took us a long time to find adequate molecules, we are very pleased with the outcome," states Professor Felix Tuczek, head of the research group "Inorganic Molecular Chemistry." The next step will be to adapt the molecules in a way that would allow scientists to switch them with light instead of electrons and at higher temperatures.

Marriage: effort or consequence? : Segullah

With a recent family wedding under my belt, several friends? recent engagements and my own wedding anniversary on Monday ? I?ve got love on the brain.

When I went on my first date with my now husband, Nathaniel, I wasn?t thinking about marriage. In fact, I wasn?t even initially sure it was a date. To say the least, things went so well that Friday night that we were out again the next night. A kiss followed on Sunday and by Monday, we were talking about marriage.

As insane as I found it myself, a few months later we were engaged. Everyone that knew us personally was supportive and even thrilled. From strangers we heard almost constant ?You?re so young!? or of course, the strained, forced ?congratulations.?

We were warned almost constantly about how difficult the first year of marriage was. But for us, marriage was easier than being engaged.

We often joke that if our first year was the worst year, we?re set for life. Of course, when we share that with others they tell us it?s because ?we?re in the honeymoon stage.?

Now after two years, if I?m talking positively about my marriage ?? mind you, my marriage is not perfect ? it?s not unusual for someone to tell me to ?just wait.? As in, when you?ve been married for x-amount of years, or when you?re in x-situation with your spouse, you?ll see how much you don?t get along.

Obviously, these conversations are the exception and not the rule.

But every time these exchanges happen, I wonder why someone would give a discouraging comment about a marital relationship. Is it because they honestly believe all relationships are the same? Is it because they?re really trying to give helpful advice? Are they frustrated with their own relationship?

I?m not saying my marriage is a fairytale or exceptionally romantic ? or anything like that. We?re best friends, though. Which means sometimes we get along perfectly and other times we drive each other crazy. And of course, our relationship does take effort, work and compromise.

But it?s wonderful and beautiful and endlessly fulfilling. And it?s not an accident. It?s not because we?ve only been married two years or because we?ve never been in the right situation that foreshadows a doomed relationship.

So in the future, I?ll vow to always encourage others? healthy relationships ? ?no husband-bashing, no comparing relationship horror stories. Because what does that do except focus on the bad in relationships? And when having a healthy, successful marriage takes so much work ? every relationship needs all the support it can get.

Site Creation
The important part is setting up your website with the Sidengo interface, and that's a breeze. The drop-down Builder menu is similar the one found on Flavors or About.me, with a floating control panel hovering over your design. Make a change and you'll see it instantly. The site itself has areas in the main template for a site logo, slogan, and links to "pages" for About Us, Products & Services, and Contact Us (you can set this to be invisible, if unnecessary).

I put "pages" in quotes because what Sidengo actually provides is a single Web page with HTML5 layers that pop-up to mimic extra pages. You're not creating a new HTML page for each section. You create up to three such sections, plus a media gallery specific to media on one of three sites: Flickr, Youtube, or Vimeo (you can't combine them). Links from your Sidengo site to social network sites are limited to YouTube, Twitter, SlideShare, and Facebook Pages (not individual Facebook profiles)?this is Sidengo keeping it professional, not personal.

Don't get it in your head that Sidengo is just a bunch of links, like other landing page builders. You need to be enough of a writer to fill in data about yourself and your business, project, or products. Think about product lists, menus, business plans, whatever customers will want to see. Prepare them before you build your Sidengo site. Once the right data is in place, a small biz using Sidengo not looks good and has a great online point of contact. Plus the sites are instantly mobile as well, so you can share them with smartphone using customers.

Options & Extras
The Sidengo dashboard has pro options such as utilizing Google Analytics to track page traffic on your Sidengo site, setup for that external domain name, custom favicons and iOS icons (for those who'd bookmark your site like it's an app), QR codes to link to your site, and best of all, direct integration with your business's Facebook Page. All of these are free during the beta test, but will cost? you after July 1, 2012. What's nice is, you can setup multiple pro-level sites at Sidengo, up to 5 for $15 per month, or 15 sites at $25 per month (less if you pay annually). Pro sites are always free for non-profits.

Sidengo is a great option for a SMB with little or no online budget, and compares very favorably to Jux, which also builds mini-sites but is more geared toward a multi-media portfolio. Neither currently offer the simplicity of creating a single-page, free personal Website for individuals like our Editors' Choice, Flavors, but if your needs are more complex and business oriented, Sidengo is a good option.

Here's some promising news about Android monetization. DeNA says that Rage of Bahamut, which was the #1 grossing game on both Android and iOS yesterday, is earning about the same revenue per day from both platforms. It's a single data point, but it goes against recent studies from companies like Flurry that say that Android lags behind in terms of monetization by a factor of 4-to-1. But Rage of Bahamut's reign at the top of the charts is a sign that these efforts are starting to bear some fruit. The title has at the top of Google Play's charts for six weeks. "This has never really been a sprint for us. It's been a marathon," Young says.

Another area of safety concerns working with adhesives and strong bonding agents. Think seriously about the tasks you must complete, and put a plan in place that will protect you as well as your home. If you are working with strong chemicals adhesives and glues, make sure you buy the right kind of protective gloves. Heavy-duty latex gloves are good, or you can ask someone at the home improvement center what they recommend. In addition to finding these heavy-duty gloves at such local home improvement centers such as Lowes, you can usually find home improvement stores online that cater to this market. Check the labels, or ask an expert at your home improvement center, if any of the chemicals you will be using are carcinogenic, because some are. Also, make sure you protect your skin from the possibility of getting a chemical burn. Please include a mask respirator that has an attached filter system in your preparations if you plan to work in an area that has poor ventilation. This is not an option.

In order to be safe, you need to find additional information other than what we have just presented. The safest way to work is to not rush and do the job in a moderate fashion. If you dont cut corners, and do the job the recommended way, youll accomplish your task safely and securely.
