Source: Sveum on Sox' list of managerial candidates
Oct 7, 2011
Dale Sveum, part of the Red Sox' coaching staff on the 2004 championship team, is on Boston's list of candidates to replace Terry Francona as manager, a baseball source indicated.
????
Sveum, who turns 48 next month, was the third-base coach for the Red Sox in 2004 and 2005. He came under criticism for being too aggressive in the role and left the organization after the 2005 season.
????
The Red Sox have not yet asked for permission to talk to Sveum since the Milwaukee Brewers, for whom Sveum serves as hitting coach, are still in the postseason. The Brewers host the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 of the NLDS Friday night.
????
Sveum played for 12 seasons in the big leagues, almost half of those with Milwaukee. He also played for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Oakland, Seattle, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox before retiring in 1999.
????
He managed three seasons at Double-A for Pittsburgh before joining the Red Sox' coaching staff in 2004. After leaving Boston, he returned to the Brewers, where, at various times he has served as the Brewers' third-base coach, bench coach, hitting coach, and, in 2008, their interim manager when Ned Yost was fired with 12 games to play.
????
The Brewers went 7-5 in those final 12 games, then lost in the NLDS to the Philadelphia Phillies in four games.
????
Sveum is among a handful of current major-league coaches the Red Sox are known to be considering for their managerial opening. Others include Tampa Bay's Dave Martinez, Philadelphia's Pete Mackanin and Cleveland's Sandy Alomar Jr.????

.There are rumblings in Chicago that the Sox may ask for the Cubs standout young shortstop, Starlin Castro, as compensation for Theo Epstein. Art Martone's response: Let's get real, shall we?

After 10 years of Nation-building, our world has changed . . . for the better on the field, maybe, but the worst in every other regard. So, John? Tom? Larry? Take off those pink hats.
The Bruins, riding an emotional high from the banner ceremony, score first but give up two goals late in the first period and wind up losing the season opener.

It's always a big week when the Patriots take on the Jets, and Tom E. Curran previews the upcoming match up between the teams with the important things to watch out for.
The Jets are expected to have center Nick Mangold back in action on Sunday, news Vince Wilfork wasn't happy to hear.
Aside from the pregame ceremonies, there wasn't much to like out of the Bruins first game of the season. It was nice, however, to see Brad Marchand back to business.
Tom Brady being badgered by a New York reporter at Gillette yesterday is case in point.
