The women's doubles team of Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthy crashed out in the first round to the pairing from Chinese Taipei... And while that was expected, the real cause of concern for the Indian tennis contingent is the slight injury worry for Sania Mirza...
The French Open mixed doubles winner had her right knee heavily strapped and grimaced in pain on more then a few occassions on court 19, as she went for her trademark forehand winners.
Speaking to us after the loss, Sania said, "The strapping on the knee is precautionary. I felt a bit of tightness during a practice session a couple of days ago and didn't want to take a chance..."
Ray of hope
And talking of chance, India's real chance of picking up a tennis medal is in the mixed doubles ... The signing in ceremony for the mixed doubles will take place on the 31st of July and the action starts from the 1st of August.
Leander Paes and Sania Mirza might not have played together since their quarter final loss at the Commonwealth Games 2 years ago, but both have plenty of doubles experience to turn it on together when the situation demands.
With both players comfortable playing on the forehand court, there was a bit of doubt as to how the two would gel together. But it seems the duo have sorted out this little problem, as sania explains... "Leander and I had a word about playing the forehand court and he's ok with me playing on the forehand side... Leander is such a great net player, it doesn't really matter which side he plays on".
